Edinboro Sweeps Saint Anselm, 3-0, to Open Hawks Invitational

  • The Short Story: The Edinboro volleyball team opened the Hawks Invitational on Friday night with a win over host Saint Anselm (25-18, 30-28, 25-21). The Fighting Scots picked up their second in a row and fifth sweep on the season. Freshman Alicia Eldredge broke her own school record for assists in a three-set match with 41 in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Early in the first set, the teams went back and forth with the score tied up at 5-5.
  • The Fighting Scots went on a 7-2 run to jump ahead 16-8 midway through the opening set.
  • The two teams then went back and forth again before Edinboro closed out the first set 25-18.
  • Edinboro jumped out to a 4-1 lead but the Hawks went on a run to take an 8-7 lead.
  • The Fighting Scots would use an 8-0 run midway through the second set to take a 16-11 lead.
  • Neither team could score more than a point on the other as Edinboro maintained the lead with a 21-17 late in the second set.
  • The Hawks pulled within one, 22-21, before Edinboro called a timeout.
  • Edinboro would force the Hawks into a timeout of their own holding a 24-21 lead in the set.
  • Saint Anselm would tie things up before back and forth points tied up the score at 28-28.
  • Kills from freshmen Sally Sterkel and Alicia Eldredge gave the Fighting Scots a 2-0 lead over the Hawks.
  • The Fighting Scots used a three and four-point run to pull ahead late 19-14 in the third set.
  • The two teams split the next six points with the Fighting Scots holding a 22-17 lead.
  • Edinboro finished out the sweep from Sterkel to win the third set 25-21.
GAME NOTES
  • Eldredge for the second match in a row set a new school record for assists in a three-set match. Her 41 against the Hawks eclipses her 40 against Glenville State on September 1.
  • The second marked the second time this season that Edinboro has gone up to 30 points in a set. Edinboro dropped the first set against MSU Mankato at the USI DoubleTree Invitational, 30-28.
  • For the match, Edinboro led the Hawks in attack percentage (.355-.216), kills (49-36), assists (46-36), service aces (9-2), digs (43-30), and total blocks (4-3).
  • Senior Megan Screptock led Edinboro with 15 kills and only one error for a .400 attack percentage in the win. She also added five digs and two assists.
  • Both Sterkel and sophomore Cierah Jackson had nine kills apiece. Jackson nearly had a double-double with eight digs to go along with her kills.
  • Sophomore Molly Brier had the match-high 11 digs over Saint Anselm.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The match marked the second straight year that Edinboro has traveled to Saint Anselm.
  • Edinboro went 4-0 in 2017 at the tournament, including a 3-2 win over the Hawks.
  • Sterkel was named the PSAC Northwest Athlete of the Week for her efforts last weekend at the Rebich Investments Invitational.
  • Edinboro was picked to finish second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Northwest Division according to the league's preseason coaches' poll.
  • Edinboro returns to the court for a pair of matches on Saturday, September 8 with matches against Mercy (12:15 pm) and Pace (2:30 pm). Both matches are part of the Hawks Invitational.
