Edinboro Splits With Mercy, Pace To Conclude Hawks Invitational

THE RUNDOWN – Edinboro vs. Mercy
  • Final Score: Edinboro 3, Mercy 0
  • Set Scores: 25-14, 25-9, 25-17
  • Records: Edinboro (7-2), Mercy (2-6)
  • Location: Manchester, N.H.
  • The Short Story: The Edinboro volleyball team down Mercy, 3-0, to win its third straight match in a sweep. The Fighting Scots conclude the Hawks Invitational with an afternoon match against Pace.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Fighting Scots got on the board early and often taking a quick and commanding 11-2 over the Mavericks.
  • Mercy was not able to score more than two points in a row the entire set as Edinboro won three of the last four points of the first set, including a pair of kills from freshman Sally Sterkel to take the opening set 25-14
  • The second set went back and for early with the two teams separated by no more than two points with the score 8-6 in favor of the Fighting Scots.
  • Six straight points for Edinboro quickly extended the lead to 14-6.
  • After a single Mavericks kill, Edinboro used another run, this time of eight points to take a commanding 22-7 lead.
  • A pair of kills by senior Hannah Cantrill and a service ace by freshman Sarah Armahizer gave Edinboro a 25-9 set two win.
  • The only Mavericks lead in the entire match came on the first point of the third set.
  • Much like the second set, the third frame went back and forth early until kills by senior Megan Screptock and freshman Alicia Eldredge gave Edinboro a 9-5 lead.
  • Mercy kept the set within three points at 16-13, before the Fighting Scots used a eight point run including four service aces by sophomore Jessica Giannoccaro to have match point.
  • A kill by Cantrill sealed the match 25-17 in the third set.
GAME NOTES
  • The only Mavericks lead in the entire match came on the first point of the third set.
  • Edinboro did not hit for less than .314 in any set. The team attack percentage of .393 was the highest this season.
  • The Fighting Scots did not give up a service ace for the second time this season.
  • For the match, Edinboro led the Hawks in attack percentage (.393-.069), kills (43-22), assists (39-21), service aces (9-0), digs (39-36), and total blocks (7-2).
  • Cantrill led the Edinboro with 15 kills (with no errors), four blocks and a dig. She hit .556 for the match.
  • Eldredge had her first double-double of her career with a 29 assist and 11 dig performance. She also added eight kills, narrowly missing out on a triple-double.

  • Location: Manchester, N.H.
  • The Short Story: The Edinboro volleyball team saw its five-match winning streak end with a 3-1 loss to the Pace Setters to conclude action at the Hawks Invitational. The tournament was hosted by Saint Anselm.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Pace won the first four points of the opening set before Edinboro used a seven-point run to take a 7-4 lead.
  • The Setters would take the lead back at 14-13 before the Fighting Scots went on a 11-1 run to go up 24-15.
  • A kill by Sterkel gave Edinboro the first set, 25-17.
  • Sophomore Cierah Jackson had a kill and a block on back to back points to give Edinboro a 10-9 lead early on in the second set.
  • Pace would lead most of the second set with the Fighting Scots pulling within two at 20-18.
  • The Setters would close out the set 25-21
  • Much of the third set was back and forth with the Setters holding a slim 11-8 lead early.
  • Edinboro tied things up at 18-18 before Pace pulled away for the 25-19 set three win.
  • Pace took an early lead before Edinboro tied this up at 14-14 midway through the fourth set.
  • The Setters took the fourth set, 25-22.
GAME NOTES
  • Edinboro saw its five-match winning streak snapped with the 3-1 loss.
  • For the match, Edinboro led the Hawks in attack percentage (.209-.193), kills (54-44), assists (54-38), service aces (8-3), and digs (71-69).
  • The two teams both had six total blocks.
  • Jackson (19), Cantrill (14) and Screptock (11) all posted double-digit kills for the Fighting Scots.
  • Screptock had her third double-double of the season. To go along with her 11 kills, she also posted 10 digs.
  • Eldredge posted her second-straight double-double with 44 assists and 14 digs.
  • Sterkel contributed all around with eight kills, six digs, and three blocks against the Setters.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORES
  • The match marked the second straight year that Edinboro has traveled to the Hawks Invitational.
  • Edinboro saw its 13-set winning streak snapped against Pace.
  • Sterkel was named the PSAC Northwest Athlete of the Week for her efforts last weekend at the Rebich Investments Invitational.
  • Edinboro was picked to finish second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Northwest Division according to the league's preseason coaches' poll.
  • Edinboro begins PSAC play next weekend when they travel to Millersville and West Chester. The Fighting Scots will take on the Marauders on Friday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m. and the Golden Rams on Saturday, September 15 at 1:00 p.m.
