Three Sophomores Have Career Day in Home Opening Loss to Shippensburg

  • The Short Story: The Edinboro women's soccer team saw its four-game winning streak over Shippensburg snapped on Saturday afternoon following a 4-2 loss at Sox Harrison Stadium. The Fighting Scots had not lost in a home opener since 2014.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Shippensburg scored its first two goals off corner kicks. The Raiders got on the board in the 20th minute when K.K. O'Donnell connected with Izzy Weigel, who drilled a shot for a 1-0 lead.
  • O'Donnell would help the Raiders increase their lead to 2-0 in the 27th minute. She fed a pass to Keegan White, who found the back left of the net.
  • Weigel scored her second goal of the day in the 38th minute off a Drew Anderson assist.
  • Edinboro got on the board early in the second half. Ellie Frania beat Shippensburg goalkeeper Delaney Shifflett for her first goal of the season on a pass from Jenna Derbis in the 51st minute.
  • Raider forward Taylor Moore connected on a breakaway opportunity in the 83rd minute, increasing the Raider lead to 4-1.
  • Cameron Bujnoski scored her first goal of the campaign in the 88th minute following a Shippensburg foul. She fired a shot into the back of the net from 25-yards out.
GAME NOTES
  • All three Edinboro point producers had a career day. Sophomores Ellie Frania and Cameron Bujnoski each scored their first career goals, while Jenna Derbis collected her first career point on Frania's goal.
  • Prior to today's contest, the Fighting Scots were 3-0-1 in their last four home openers.
  • Shippensburg edged Edinboro in shots, 15-13. However, the Fighting Scots had a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Six Edinboro freshmen played their first contest at Sox Harrison Stadium.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Edinboro was picked to finish ninth in the PSAC Preseason Coaches Poll, while Shippensburg was selected to finish 11th.
  • The Fighting Scots entered the contest having won four straight matches against the Raiders. Last year, Edinboro scored two goals in the final five minutes to shock Shippensburg, 3-2.
  • Prior to Saturday's loss, the Fighting Scots had not lost a home opener in regulation since the 2013 campaign.
  • Edinboro is now 13-9-2 all-time against Shippensburg.
UP NEXT
  • Edinboro returns to action on Wednesday, September 5, at home against local rival Gannon. The Lady Knights were picked to finish fourth in the PSAC Preseason Coaches Poll. They are 1-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the PSAC. Before heading to Sox Harrison Stadium, they will host Notre Dame (Ohio) in a non-conference tilt.
  • The Fighting Scots trail the Lady Knights 8-14-4 in the all-time series.
