Fighting Scots Comeback Bid Falls Short in 3-2 Loss At West Chester

  • The Short Story: The Edinboro volleyball team suffered a tough 3-2 loss at West Chester on Saturday afternoon to finish the weekend. After dropping the first two sets, by scores 25-11 and 25-9, the Fighting Scots forced a deciding set winning the third and fourth sets 25-23 and 25-17, respectively. It was a close fifth with the host Golden Rams pulling out a close fifth set, 15-13. Edinboro moves to 7-5 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC Northwest. West Chester improves to 12-0 and 2-0 in the PSAC Southeast.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After falling behind two sets to none, Edinboro took back momentum and forced a fifth set, winning the third and fourth sets.
  • The Fighting Scots jumped out to a 6-2 early in the final set before the Golden Rams tied things up at 10-10. 
  • West Chester took its first lead of the deciding set at 13-12 before Edinboro tied things up at 13-13. 
  • The Golden Rams took the final set 15-13 with an Edinboro attack error.
  • The Fighting Scots had one last rally left, running off three straight points to make the score 14-11. Megan Screptock accounted for a pair of the points with kills, but Katie Laughman's kill ended the contest. 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Cierah Jackson led Edinboro for the second straight contest with a match-high 21 kills. She also added three blocks and three digs. Jackson totaled 51 kills in the two matches this weekend.
  • Freshman Sally Sterkel also reached double-digit kills (11) against West Chester. 
  • Senior Megan Screptock and sophomore Molly Brier each had a team-high 13 digs in the five-set loss.
  • Alicia Eldredge dished out 39 of Edinboro's 40 assists on the afternoon. It was the seventh time this season she has had 30-or-more assists.
NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS
  • Edinboro is back in action on Friday, September 21 when they host East Stroudsburg at 7:00 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse. The Warriors are coming off a pair of PSAC wins against Gannon (3-0) and Mercyhurst (3-1) to open conference play.
  • The Fighting Scots will then entertain Kutztown on Saturday, September 22 at 1:00 p.m., also in McComb Fieldhouse. The Golden Bears dropped both ends on the weekend with a pair of 3-0 losses to Gannon and Mercyhurst.
