HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cal would jump out to a 27-14 lead at the half. The Vulcans got on the scoreboard first with an impressive 9-play, 67-yard drive featuring freshman QB Noah Mitchell. He completed four passes for 47 yards before Nelson Brown bulled in from two yards out for a 7-0 lead with 11:01 left in the first quarter.
  • Edinboro answered thanks to a Zuril Hendrick interception. The senior cornerback returned his 17th career interception 54 yards to the Cal 9. Three plays later, the Fighting Scots were in the end zone thanks to a five-yard pass from Andrew Tomko to Ta'Nauz Gregory. The contest was tied at 7-7 with 5:40 left in the quarter.
  • The Fighting Scots grabbed the lead at 14-7 early in the second quarter thanks to another big play by Hendrick. He blocked Tristan Williams' punt, with the ball rolling out of bounds at the Cal 26. Three plays netted five yards, and Jake Monroe came in to attempt a 38-yard field goal. Instead, Tomko took the snap and roiled around right end down the sideline untouched for a 21-yard TD run on the fake field goal.
  • Cal responded with three unanswered scores in the second quarter. The first came four plays after Edinboro took the lead. The 58-yard drive was capped by a 42-yard scoring pass from Mitchell to Jordan Dandridge, knotting the contest at 14-14 with 11:20 remaining in the half.
  • The Vulcans used another short field to go ahead 21-14. Following a short punt to the Edinboro 40, Cal drove 40 yards in six plays, with Brown recording his second short TD run from a yard out with 7:20 remaining.
  • Edinboro was driving in hopes of tying the score after Tomko and Gregory combined on a 43-yard pass play. The Fighting Scots were down to the Cal 19 when James Clark caught a short pass and was stripped of the ball. Lamont McPhatter picked it up and went 82 yards for the touchdown as Cal suddenly led 27-14 with 3:51 left. Brian Alsobrooks' PAT was no good.
  • The third quarter began with Edinboro driving to the Cal 23 before turning the ball over on downs. One play later, the Scots had the ball back as freshman CB Branson Smith tipped Mitchell's pass, and Trey Hall intercepted, giving the Scots the ball at the Cal 18. Four plays later, Fletcher scored on a one-yard run off left guard, and EU trailed 27-21 with 11:43 left.
  • Cal would drive down inside the EU 20, but DeAndre Dowdell forced a fumble, recovered by Ryan Bischof. The Scots got one first down before a short punt gave the Vulcans the ball back at the EU 38. They needed six plays to travel the 38 yards, with Brown scoring for the third time on a four-yard run with 4:08 left in the third for a 34-21 lead.
  • Edinboro ended the third quarter with a touchdown and midway through the fourth took the lead with a score as both teams continued to turn it over. The first score was set up by another fumble, with Ethan Upperco forcing the ball loose from Brown and Brandon Anderson recovering at the Cal 7. It marked the third turnover in four plays by the two teams. Fletcher scored on the next play, his second of the day, on a seven-yard run as the Scots pulled to within 34-28 with 1:09 left in the quarter.
  • Edinboro completed the comeback following a Cal punt. Taking over at their own 29, the Scots put together the longest scoring drive of the day, going 71 yards in four plays. Fletcher's 41-yard run put the Scots at the Cal 17. Kyle Galyk stepped in and burst 17 yards untouched for the score on the next play. Jake Monroe's extra point gave the Scots a 35-34 lead with 8:01 remaining.
  • Unfortunately, Cal took the ensuing kickoff and regained the lead seven plays later. Mitchell hooked up with Cam Tarrant for a 20-yard gain, and one play later, Brown's 25-yard gain gave the Vulcans the ball at the EU 20. On 3rd-and-eight, Mitchell threw his second touchdown pass of the day, covering 18 yards to Tyson Hill. The Vulcans failed on the two-point conversion pass, but led 40-35 with 5:20 to play.
  • Edinboro had one more possession. A holding penalty on first down left Edinboro facing a 1st-and-20 at their own 22. Two runs netted a combined loss of a yard, and Tomko's third-down pass was well out of bounds. Edinboro would punt, and Cal converted on 3rd-and-nine and went on to run out the clock.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Edinboro was held to a season-low 258 yards, matching their output against Bloomsburg. The Fighting Scots finished with 143 yards through the air and 115 on the ground.
