Fighting Scots Rally for 68-63 Win at UPJ Behind Walton's Career-High 38 Points

  • The Short Story:  For second consecutive game, the contest was decided in the final minute of play. Jontay Walton had a strong fourth quarter performance. She finished with a career-high 38 points and eight steals. Walton scored 22 of Edinboro's 24 points in the period, including all 22 back-to-back. Neither team led by more than five points until the very end of the second quarter, as Pitt-Johnstown led 34-26 at halftime. Both teams combined for 14 lead changes and seven ties.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first quarter resulted in eight lead changes and three ties. Neither team led by more than five points until the very end of the second quarter, as Pitt-Johnstown's Tori Moreland drilled a 3-pointer with five seconds left That gave the Mountain Cats a 34-26 lead at halftime.
  • UPJ's Gabrielle Smith extended Edinboro's deficit to 10 points at 36-26 with a just over a minute gone by in the second half. However, Bridgette Shaffer, Allison Thompson, and Jontay Walton erased Edinboro's deficit with a 15-6 scoring run. Shaffer started the comeback drilling back-to-back 3-pointers, followed by consecutive layups from Walton. The 5'6" guard then made two free throws. Thompson and Walton capped off the run with layups, knotting the game at 42-42.
  • The Fighting Scots would not regain the lead until the fourth quarter, as they entered the stanza trailing 46-44. However, that number quickly grew with the Mountain Cats scoring three layups in a row for a 52-44 advantage with 8:11 remaining in the contest.
  • Following an Edinboro timeout, Walton got to work with a 9-0 scoring run. She converted a traditional 3-point play, before drilling back-to-back 3-pointers. Her second 3-pointer put Edinboro on top at 53-52. It was the Fighting Scots first lead since 17-16 early in the second quarter.
  • Smith scored the next three points for UPJ, once again tying the game. A Monica Brown steal led to Walton converting another three-point play. After the two players once again exchanged baskets. Walton made her way back to the foul line looking to capitalize on her third three-point play of the quarter. After making the free throw, Edinboro had its biggest lead up to that point in the half at 62-58 with 18 seconds left.
  • Alli McGrath drained a 3-pointer on UPJ's ensuing possession. With Edinboro leading by just one point, Walton was intentionally fouled. She made both free throws and secured the win.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Both teams struggled to make their baskets. Edinboro connected on 38.3 pct. (23-of-59) of its attempts, including 9-of-23 3-pointers, but went 13-of-14 at the foul line. The Mountain Cats shot 42.9 pct. (21-of-49), including 3-of-15 on 3-pointers. However, like the Fighting Scots, Pitt-Johnstown had a good shooting performance at the charity stripe, going 18-for-21.
  • Jontay Walton finished the game with a career-high 38 points. She made four 3-pointers and was perfect at the free throw line, shooting 10-for-10. The graduate student also grabbed five rebounds, had a career-best eight steals, and committed only four turnovers in 38 minutes. Of her 38 points, 30 came in the second half, including 22 straight in the fourth quarter.
  • Bridgette Shaffer was the only other Fighting Scot to contribute double digits with 12 points. Shooting 4-of-9 from the field, all four of her made baskets coming from long-range. The 5'8" redshirt junior also collected four boards and had two steals. Allison Thompson provided much-needed energy off the bench. She scored six points and led the Scots with a team-high seven rebounds, including five offensive boards.
  • Gabrielle Smith led UPJ with 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three blocks. Alli McGrath, a transfer from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, entered the contest averaging 20.3 ppg. She was held to 11 points on 3-of-10 shooting, with eight rebounds, four assists, and five turnovers. In addition, McGrath and Smith made UPJ the lone team among all three NCAA Divisions with two players averaging 20.0+ ppg.
  • Tori Moreland also contributed double figures with 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting.
  • Turnover issues were the biggest difference in the game. Edinboro had 12 steals, forcing 19 turnovers for 19 points. UPJ finished with four steals and scored 10 points off of 13 Fighting Scots giveaways.
  • Both teams also combined for Both teams combined for 14 lead changes and seven ties. The Fighting Scots outscored the Mountain Cats, 42-29 in the second half.
  • The Mountain Cats led 34-28 in rebounds and outscored Edinboro in the paint, 30-26.
  • Michaela Barnes was limited to only 14 minutes in the second half with four fouls. Ciara Rosten sat for the majority of the second half due to injury.
