Fighting Scots Halt Skid with 82-77 Win at Clarion

THE GAME FACTS

  • The Short Story: Edinboro built a 15-point lead then held off a late Clarion rally to snap a seven-game losing streak. The Fighting Scots would grab the lead for good at 8-7, and built a 15-lead late in the first half and again early in the second half. Clarion made things interesting as the Golden Eagles would close to within one point with 8:21 left, and to two points at 71-69 with just under two minutes to play. Freshman Turner Kurt gave the Fighting Scots some breathing room with a 3-pointer, and they went on to make 8-of-10 free throws to preserve the victory. Jaryn Simpson led four players in double figures with 20 points. In his first career start, Trey Staunch totaled 18 points, with Daylon Harris contributing 18. Kurt finished with nine points.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro grabbed the lead for good with just over 15 minutes left in the first half on a Trey Staunch layup for an 8-7 lead. The lead was still just four points at 28-24 with 6:02 left in the half, but Edinboro ran off the next six points, including a 3-pointer by Daylon Harris, to boost the advantage to double digits at 34-24.
  • That was part of a 14-3 run over the next five minutes as Edinboro reached its biggest lead of the night at 42-27 with 52 seconds left on a jumper by Alex Jay. The Fighting Scots would a 42-29 lead at the half while shooting 50.0 percent from the floor (16-of-32). Harris led the way with 13 points and five rebounds, while Jaryn Simpson and Staunch added nine points apiece.
  • A pair of Turner Kurt free throws early in the second half built the lead back to 15 at 44-29, but Clarion would start chipping away at the lead.
  • Staunch's layup at the 13:55 mark gave the Scots a 50-40 lead. A 6-1 run by Clarion pulled the Golden Eagles to 51-46 just over a minute later.  
  • With the Edinboro lead at eight points at 56-48 following a Simpson three, Clarion pulled to within a point at 56-55 with 8:21 to play thanks to a 7-0 run, the first points by Khari Williams.
  • Simpson buried a three 20 seconds later, and the Scots eventually built the lead back up to eight points at 70-62 on Steven Freeman's basket with 4:00 to play.
  • Clarion had one last run left, using a pair of free throws by Elijah Cottrill with 1:49 to play to make the score 71-69. Kurt gave the Fighting Scots some breathing room as the freshman forward knocked down a three. After a Clarion miss, Simpson converted a pair of free throws to boost the lead to 76-69 with 1:14 to play. Edinboro would make 8-of-10 free throws, beginning with Simpson's pair, to close out the win
BY THE NUMBERS  
  • Jaryn Simpson led four players in double figures with 20 points, his eighth game of 20-or-more points. The sophomore guard came in ranked seventh in the PSAC in scoring. He added seven assists, while making 5-of-11 field goals, including 3-of-7 3-pointers, and going 7-of-8 at the line.
  • Trey Staunch made his first career start, and the former offensive lineman ended the night with 18 points and six rebounds despite battling foul trouble and playing 21 minutes.
  • Daylon Harris enjoyed one of his best nights of the year, as the junior forward made 7-of-14 field goals, including 3-of-6 3-pointers, to end the night with 18 points. He added six rebounds.
  • With Staunch in foul trouble, Anthony Allen picked up additional playing time. The 6'8" junior responded with a season-high 10 rebounds and a pair of blocks in 19 minutes. He had totaled just nine rebounds in eight previous games.
  • Steven Freeman provided a boost down the stretch after missing the last two games with an injury. The junior guard entered the game with ten minutes remaining and contributed seven points.  
  • Edinboro ended the night shooting 47.5 percent from the floor (28-of-59), making 8-of-19 3-pointers, while going 18-of-27 at the free throw line. The Fighting Scots held Clarion to 39.5 percent (30-of-76), the lowest figure by an opponent in the last eight games. The Golden Eagles made 3-of-14 3-pointers and were 14-of-28 from the charity stripe.
  • Clarion held a 49-38 edge on the glass, pulling down 25 offensive rebounds. That led to an 18-5 advantage in second chance points. Edinboro committed 10 turnovers and Clarion eight.
  • The Golden Eagles had four players in double digits, with Elijah Cottrill coming off the bench for 20 points and seven rebounds. Khari Williams finished with 16 points, while Stevan Rodriguez had a double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Javontay Pipkin had 11 points.
NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS
  • After playing five of the last six games on the road, Edinboro begins a three-game homestand on Saturday, January 26, hosting Slippery Rock. Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse is set for 3:00 p.m.
