Fast Start, Five Scorers in Double Figures Leads Fighting Scots to 85-64 Win Over Slippery Rock

The Short Story:  Edinboro had a strong first quarter performance, making 10-of-15 field goals, including 6-of-9 3-pointers for a 27-17 advantage. Slippery Rock fought back, cutting the deficit to five with an 8-0 run early in the period. After leading, 41-35 at halftime, the Rock came to within six points twice in the early stages of the third quarter. That would be as close as they got over the final 20 minutes. Edinboro never trailed in the contest and led by as much as 23 points in the fourth quarter. Five Edinboro players scored in double figures. Michaela Barnes led all players with 25 points on 9-of-18 shooting and 7-of-8 free throws. Jontay Walton finished with her first double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, while Bridgette Shaffer recorded her fourth career double-double with 11 points and 12 boards. Ciara Rosten added 19 points and nine rebounds and Michelle Jahn contributed 17 points, making four 3-pointers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro's first four baskets of the game were from long range. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Bridgette Shaffer and Ciara Rosten were the first baskets of the game. Jontay Walton would drill a 3-pointer and Shaffer connected on her second of the quarter. That gave Edinboro a 12-3 lead at the 6:36 mark.  
  • The Fighting Scots ended the opening frame shooting 66.7 percent (10-of-15), including 6-of-9 from behind the arc.
  • After Michaela Barnes converted a traditional three-point play to begin the second period, the Rock scored the next eight points. Brooke Hinderliter made a pair of free throws, while Ciara Patterson drilled back-to-back 3-pointers. That cut Edinboro's lead to five at 30-25 with under eight minutes left until halftime.
  • At the half, Edinboro led by six points at 41-35. The Scots shot 41.2 percent from the floor (14-of-34), while holding Slippery Rock to a 32.4 percent clip (12-of-37).
  • Slippery Rock came to within six points early in the third period, at 43-35 and 45-39, but that's as close as the Rock got in the third and fourth quarters.
  • Edinboro began the fourth period on a 6-0 run. Michelle Jahn scored on a layup, followed by a Rosten jumper and Barnes layup. A Daeja Quick layup stopped the Edinboro run, but the Scots rallied off the next seven points. That put Edinboro on top, 76-55.
  • Edinboro led by as much as 23 points in the fourth quarter. The Fighting Scots held Slippery Rock to three points over the final 5:44.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Five Fighting scored in double figures, led by Michaela Barnes with 25 points. She made 9-of-18 field goals and 7-of-8 free throws, in addition to bringing down seven rebounds. The junior guard increased her career scoring total to 988 points.
  • Jontay Walton and Bridgette Shaffer each finished with a double-double. Walton scored 13 points and pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the campaign. In addition, she had a game-high seven assists. As for Shaffer, she posted her fourth double-double this year with 11 points and a game-high 12 boards.
  • Ciara Rosten nearly finished with a double-double, contributing 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting while collecting nine boards. She also blocked a season-high six shots. The 6'2" forward moved up to 31st in career scoring at Edinboro with 1,026 points.
  • Michelle Jahn contributed 17 points, making four 3-pointers.
  • Edinboro shot 40.6 percent overall (28-of-69), made 9-of-25 3-pointers, and 20-of-28 free throws. The Rock were held to 32.9 percent (23-of-70) from the floor, including 6-of-25 3-pointers, and 12-of-19 free throws.
  • Edinboro dominated the battle of the boards, 58-37, including a 20-12 advantage on the offensive glass. The Fighting Scots led 32-24 in points in the paint.
  • Slippery Rock's Brooke Hinderliter scored her 1,000th career point in the first quarter. She finished with a team-high 21 points, to go with five rebounds. Ciara Patterson was the only other SRU player to score in double digits with 17 points, making four 3-pointers and all three of her free throws. Morgan Henderson grabbed a team-best seven boards.
  • Edinboro is ranked ninth in the D2SIDA Atlantic Region poll.
