Fighting Scots Drop 90-59 Decision to Mercyhurst

  • The Short Story: Better known for its defense, Mercyhurst could barely miss in the first half while jumping out to a 53-27 lead at intermission. The Lakers shot 66.7 percent from the floor in the first half (22-of-33), making 14 of their first 17 shots. The Fighting Scots remained within striking distance for the first ten minutes, but were done in by a 19-1 run, including 16 straight points. That boosted Mercyhurst's lead from 34-24 to 53-25 as Edinboro went scoreless for over five minutes. Mercyhurst would end the game shooting 58.1 percent, including 10-of-23 on 3-pointers, for their sixth straight win.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mercyhurst would score the first seven points of the game, leading to a quick Edinboro timeout. Back came the Fighting Scots with an 8-2 run to close to 9-8. Mercyhurst recorded another run of ten straight points to take the first double digit lead of the night at 19-8 with 14:45 remaining.
  • A Trey Staunch layup and Daylon Harris' 3-pointer brought the Fighting Scots back to 19-13. Mercyhurst would build the deficit back up to double figures, and then dealt the Fighting Scots a run they could not recover from. Leading 34-24 with eight minutes left in the half, the Lakers scored the next 16 points as part of a 19-1 run.
  • Turnovers proved Edinboro's undoing, as the Fighting Scots turned the ball over six times in that stretch.
  • Mercyhurst would take a 53-27 lead into the half, shooting 66.7 percent from the floor (22-of-33). Edinboro committed 14 turnovers in the first half, leading to 23 points.
BY THE NUMBERS  
  • Trey Staunch and Jaryn Simpson paced the Fighting Scots with 15 points apiece, with Simpson grabbing a team-high 8 rebounds while making 3-of-6 3-pointers. Staunch pulled down seven boards.  Daylon Harris and Alex Jay also had seven rebounds.
  • Mercyhurst had four players reach double figures, led by Nelson Maxwell's 24 points. Jason Massey finished with 18 points, MiyKah McIntosh 14, and Nicholas Lang 12.
  • Facing the second stingiest defense in Division II at just over 60 ppg., Edinboro shot 38.2 percent from the floor (21-of-55), making 8-of-21 3-pointers, while going 9-of-13 at the free throw line. Mercyhurst finished at 58.1 percent from the floor(36-of-62), a high by an opponent this season. The Lakers made 10-of-23 3-pointers and were 8-of-10 at the line.

NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS
  • Edinboro is off on Saturday, February 2 and does not return to action until Wednesday, February 6. The Fighting Scots will wrap up a three-game homestand hosting Pitt-Johnstown. Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse is set for 7:30 p.m.
