Fighting Scots Prevail in Yet Another Overtime, Winning 3-2 at IUP

INDIANA, Pa. – A change in venue and starting time, plus overtime. All in a day's work for the Edinboro women's soccer team.  It all added up to a 3-2 win in two overtimes at Indiana(Pa.) on Wednesday night. The Fighting Scots improved to 8-2-2 on the season and 8-0-2 in the PSAC West. IUP is now 6-5-0 and 5-5-0,  respectively.

The match was originally scheduled to be played on the IUP campus at 3 p.m., but heavy rains left the field unplayable.  It was moved to Indiana Area High School with a 7 p.m. start.

Edinboro has now played five overtime contests in the last six matches. They are 3-0-2 in that stretch. In addition, the Fighting are now 8-0-2 in the last ten matches, the top streak in school history.

The Fighting Scots remained a point behind Slippery Rock for first place in the PSAC West thanks to Brittnie Spithaler, who scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season at 103:56 to finally end the match. Clare Crossley assisted on the game-winner.

Rebecca Manns opened the scoring with her third goal of the season at 29:48, assisted by Ashley Bayer. IUP's Mahogany Willis knotted the score at 1-1 at 38:25 with her PSAC-leading 12th goal of the season. The goal was the first allowed by Anna Voelker in 371-plus minutes. The sophomore had recorded three straight shutouts. The teams went into halftime tied at 1-1, with the Crimson Hawks owning a 7-4 advantage in shots.

Edinboro would regain the lead at 2-1 at 63:55 on Bayer's first career goal, with Mary Sinan picking up the assist. The lead would last for six minutes before IUP's Samantha Joyce tied the contest at 2-2 at 59:56, assisted by Makenzie Witzel.    

Edinboro held a 22-15 advantage in shots, and both teams had six corner kicks apiece.  Voelker finished with 12 saves. IUP used Madeline Smakulski and Maria Tunney in goal, with the pair combining for 12 saves.

The Fighting Scots return to action on Saturday, October 19 hosting Cal U. They will celebrate Senior Day, recognizing seniors Aubrey Billittier, Danielle Chatten, and Sidney Dobbins. The match gets underway at 5 p.m.
