Fighting Scots Inch Closer to Playoff Berth with 0-0 Tie vs. Clarion on Cancer Awareness Night

EDINBORO, Pa. – While visiting Clarion denied the Edinboro women's soccer team a chance to clinch a PSAC Tournament berth, the Fighting Scots kept alive a school-record string for non-losing efforts on Tuesday night. Edinboro and Clarion battled to a 0-0 tie in two overtimes at Sox Harrison Stadium. The match was Edinboro's annual Cancer Awareness Game.

The tie leaves the Fighting Scots at 9-2-3 overall and 9-0-3 in the PSAC West. Clarion, which came in riding a two-match winning streak, is now 3-9-1 and 2-9-1, respectively. Edinboro is now 9-0-3 over its last 12 contests.

Edinboro has still never lost to Clarion, improving to 21-0-5 all-time vs. the Golden Eagles. Clarion did put the Fighting Scots into a holding pattern for one of the four PSAC playoff spots in the division. Slippery Rock has 33 points and clinched a postseason berth, Edinboro now has 30. Head coach Gary Kagiavas' team would have clinched a spot in the playoff field with a win. Seton Hill is next with 18 points. Edinboro has four contests remaining, and is off until next Wednesday, October 30 when the Scots play at Gannon.

A quiet first half saw Edinboro hold a 4-2 lead in shots. The intensity would pick up in the second half, as Edinboro outshoot the Golden Eagles 12-3. That included several excellent early scoring opportunities. In fact, Clare Crossley actually found the back of the next in the 49th minute, but the goal was waived off on an offsides call.

Edinboro would outshoot Clarion 7-1 in the two overtime sessions, but they could not get anything past Brigid Stermel. Stermel barely tipped away Danielle Chatten's shot from close range less than two minutes into the second overtime, and with just under two minutes to play Chatten would just miss again.

Edinboro held a 23-6 advantage in shots, and held an 8-0 edge in corner kicks. Stermel ended the night with 10 saves, while Anna Voelker registered her sixth shutout of the season and ninth of her career with three saves. The sophomore is now tied for third in season shutouts and ranks sixth in career shutouts.
