AROUND THE PSAC

MATCH STORYLINES
  • Edinboro has run off three straight wins following a 3-2 win at Mercyhurst on Tuesday. The Fighting Scots search for a fourth straight win tonight against Seton Hill to tie the longest winning streak of the season. Edinboro has improved to 13-10 overall, and more importantly, is 7-5 in the PSAC Northwest. The Fighting Scots are looking to lock down a spot in the PSAC Tournament.
  • Edinboro will hold its annual Military Appreciation Night on Friday vs. Seton Hill. The Fighting Scots will host a number of members of the Pa. Soldiers and Sailors Home in Erie as part of the festivities.
  • Cierah Jackson was named the PSAC Northwest Division Athlete of the Week for the second time this season earlier this week. The junior outside hitter followed it up with an 11-kill performance at Mercyhurst. She now has 1,030 career kills, moving into 12th place in career kills. She has had double figures in kills in 20 of 23 matches. Jackson has a team-high 287 kills and has led Edinboro in kills in 17 of the 23 matches. Jackson was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Javelina Volleyball Invitational. She has earned second team All-PSAC honors while leading the Fighting Scots in kills each of her first two seasons.
  • The story of the night at Mercyhurst was the play of middle hitters Erica Sharp and Sally Sterkel. The duo combined for 29 kills, as both finished with season highs. Sharp, a freshman, posted a match-high 17 kills, along with a .667 hitting percentage.  She also had 6 block assists. Sterkel totaled 12 kills and a .385 hitting percentage. She has 108 kills and 29 total blocks despite getting a slow start to the season due to an injury. Sharp leads the team with 69 total blocks and stands third in kills with 158.
  • Freshman Bella Burrelli chipped in with 14 kills and had 10 digs while playing on the campus where he father Mark Burrelli played football in the 1980's. A 6'0" outside hitter, she stands second on the team in both kills (241) and digs (212), and is second in service aces (37).
  • Molly Breier anchored a strong defensive effort with a career-high 27 digs, bringing her career total to 921. She ranks 17th in career digs. Breier has a team-high 314 digs.
  • Alicia Eldredge posted career-highs of 57 assists and maybe more importantly, 6 block assists at Mercyhurst. The sophomore setter added five kills and 5 digs. She now has 1,678 assists, ranking tenth all-time. She leads the Fighting Scots with 782 assists and 38 service aces, along with standing third in digs (158) and total blocks (38).
  • Middle hitter Paige Morris, a 5'9" junior, adds 83 kills and 50 blocks, the latter figure ranking second on the team.
  • Seton Hill comes in with a 12-8 record, and more importantly, leads the PSAC Southwest with a 7-4 record. The Griffins are also riding a three-game winning streak. The Griffins of long-time head coach Rick Hall are the defending PSAC champions after upsetting nationally-ranked Gannon in last year's finals. The Griffins would go on to reach the Atlantic Regional finals before losing to Wheeling Jesuit in the finals. They ended the year with a 26-9 record.
  • Cal U is 11-8 overall and 6-5 in the PSAC Southwest. The Vulcans play at Gannon on Thursday, October 31 and at Mercyhurst on Friday, November 1 before visiting McComb Fieldhouse for their third straight match in three days on Saturday.
