Shields Scores Game-Winner in Second Overtime for 1-0 Win over UPJ

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro women's soccer team needed overtime for the third time straight match, but thanks to Marissa Shields, the Fighting Scots have won all three of those matches. Shields scored at 105:04 for the lone goal of the match as Edinboro prevailed 1-0 over Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday afternoon. The victory at Sox Harrison Stadium boosted the Fighting Scots to 6-2-1 overall and 6-0-1 in PSAC West action, while UPJ is 3-6-0 and 3-5-0, respectively.

With the victory, Edinboro moves past idle Slippery Rock into first place in the PSAC West with 19 points. SRU has 18 points. Edinboro is now 6-0-1 in its last seven matches and is off to its best start since the 2016 team started 8-1-0.

The evenly-played match was scoreless through regulation and one ten-minute overtime session despite the Fighting Scots holding a 14-7 advantage in shots through that period. Edinboro would have the lone two shots in the second overtime session, and the second finally got past UPJ goalkeeper Maria Mosquera.

Mosquera had five saves to that point, but was unable to come up with a sixth as Shields fired the ball past her from 10 yards out into the right corner of the net for her first goal of the season. Edinboro's Anna Voelker had four saves while recording her second shutout of the season and fifth of her career.

After wrapping up four straight games at home, Edinboro heads out on the road for three straight matches. It begins on Wednesday, October 9 at Seton Hill.
