Edinboro Advances to PSAC Final Four Behind Two Chatten Goals for 2-1 Win over Mercyhurst

EDINBORO, Pa. – In what could well go down as the coldest game in Edinboro women's soccer history, the Fighting Scots handed Mercyhurst a 2-1 defeat behind two goals by Danielle Chatten. The victory in the PSAC Quarterfinal contest advances the Fighting Scots into the PSAC Final Four and a semifinal match against the winner of the Bloomsburg-West Chester quarterfinal contest. That match will take place later today.

Slippery Rock, the number one seed in the Western Division, will serve as the host of the PSAC Final Four. The Rock edged Indiana(Pa.), 2-1. Edinboro is the number two seed in the match and improved to 11-5-3, while number three seed Mercyhurst is 11-6-2 after seeing its five-match winning streak come to an end..

Edinboro will make its third appearance in the PSAC Final Four, all under head coach Gary Kagiavas, who is the only coach the program has had. The last time the Fighting Scots reached the semifinals was 2015, when they reached the finals for the first time before falling to East Stroudsburg.

The temperature at the start of the game was 25 degrees and dropped several degrees during the course of the match. With a 10 mph wind out of the northwest, the wind chill was 13 degrees.

Edinboro had to survive a first half in which Mercyhurst had the wind in its favor. The Lakers would hold a 9-2 lead in shots, but goalkeeper Anna Voelker was up to the task. The sophomore had nine saves in the half, one a diving save on a shot from 10 yards out by Mercyhurst's Amber Thomas.

With the wind in Edinboro's favor in the second half, the Fighting Scots were able to mount a more consistent attack. Chatten would finally break the scoreless tie at the 63:27 mark with her first goal. The senior gathered in a pass from Rebecca Manns to the left of the net, and fired a shot from 15 yards out past Vilde Wold into the left corner of the net.

Less than two minutes later the lead was 2-0 on another goal by Chatten. Mary Sinan's free kick from 35 yards out was not fielded cleanly by Wold. Chatten would gather it in just in front of the Laker goalkeeper and chip it past for her for her 11th goal of the season.

Mercyhurst would cut the lead in half with just under 11 minutes left in the match on a penalty kick by Maya Bauer, here eighth goal of the season. The Lakers were unable to come up with a solid scoring opportunity the rest of the way.

Chatten now 11 goals and 27 points on the season, with both figures ranking 10th in a season. In addition, she now has 28 career goals and 71 career points. She moved into a tie for ninth place in both career goals and career points. Manns is fifth in career assists with 19, and her team-leading 8 assists is tied for fourth in a season.

Mercyhurst would finish with a 15-10 advantage in shots, with Edinboro holding a 5-2 lead in corner kicks. Voelker would finish with 10 saves and now has 11 wins on the season, which is tied for fifth in a season. Wold ended with 5 saves for Mercyhurst.
