Edinboro Reaches PSAC Finals with 1-0 Win over West Chester

Mann's Goal, Backup Goalie Sleva Leads Scots to Victory

Maddie Sleva makes one of her eight saves.
Box Score (New/Sortable Format) SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – It will be an All-Western Division final on Sunday, November 17 as Edinboro punched its ticket to the PSAC Championship Game with a 1-0 win over West Chester on Friday afternoon at Slippery Rock's Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. The Fighting Scots, the number two seed in the PSAC West, improved to 12-5-3 overall, while West Chester, the number seed out of the Eastern Division, fell to 12-5-2.

Edinboro will make its second appearance in the PSAC Finals, but also the second in the last five years. The 2015 team reached the finals before losing to East Stroudsburg. The Fighting Scots had not beaten West Chester since that same 2015 season.

Slippery Rock advanced to the title game with a 1-0 win in overtime over East Stroudsburg in the earlier semifinal contest. Edinboro and Slippery Rock have split a pair of meetings this season. The Fighting Scots won the first meeting at Sox Harrison Stadium by a 2-1 decision in overtime. The Rock rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit in the second meeting at SRU to win 3-2.

The win over West Chester also could have huge ramifications in the hunt for an NCAA Division II Tournament berth. West Chester came in ranked sixth in the latest Atlantic Region rankings, while Edinboro was eighth. The top six teams will qualify for the NCAA Tournament, with the announcement set for Monday, November 18.

Edinboro would take a quick 1-0 lead just 5:31 into the match, as Rebecca Manns took a pass from Jenna Derbis on the left wing and fired a shot from 20 yards out past WCU goalkeeper Hayley McGee into the right corner of the net for her fifth goal of the season.

The complexion of the match would change just over six minutes later when Edinboro goalkeeper Anna Voelker went down with an injury. The sophomore had played every minute in goal in 2019 up until that point, and a day earlier was named a second team All-PSAC West selection.
Freshman Maddie Sleva would be called on in goal. She would get her first real test in the 29th minute on a long shot by Jesse Magee, and was up to the challenge. WCU would hold a 4-2 advantage in shots in the first half.

There was no scoring in the second half, but West Chester kept constant pressure on Sleva, particularly in the final 20 minutes. She would come up with several key saves while ending the day with eight while playing the final 78:05.

Sleva was also buoyed by a strong effort from the back line of Cameron Bujnoski, Mary Sinan, Maggie Fragapane, and Derbis.  Sidney Dobbins was a defensive mainstay in the midfield.

West Chester would end with a 14-5 advantage in shots, and had all five of the match's corner kicks. McGee finished with two saves.
