Jackson, Burrelli Have Big Nights as Fighting Scots Fall to Top-Seeded Gannon in PSAC Quarterfinals

  • The Short Story: A hustling Edinboro squad put a scare into top-seeded Gannon in Tuesday's PSAC Quarterfinal match, but in the end the eighth-seeded Fighting Scots were unable to complete the upset as Gannon ran off its 12th straight win. Edinboro would prevail in the first game, 25-22, snapping a string of 33 straight sets won by the Lady Knights, Unfortunately, Gannon would start a new streak, winning the next three sets by scores of 25-19, 25-13, 25-11. In each set Gannon was able to jump ahead early and hold off Edinboro. Cierah Jackson led Edinboro with 16 kills, moving her into eighth place in career kills with 1,131. Freshman Bella Burrelli had a double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs. The Fighting Scots were forced to play without sophomore middle hitter Sally Sterkel, who was out with an illness. Edinboro ends the season with a  16-14 record. Gannon will move on to host the PSAC Final Four with a 27-5 record.
HOW IT HAPPENED   
  • Edinboro would take control of the first set with a string of five straight points to take an 18-14 lead. Gannon closed to 20-18, but the Fighting Scots responded with straight points on a pair of kills by Bella Burrelli and another Cierah Jackson for a 23-18 lead. Gannon wasn't done just yet. After an exchange of points to make it 24-19, the Lady Knights ran off three straight points to close to 24-22. Paige Morris followed with a big kill for the 25-22 win. Burrelli had 5 kills and Jackson 4 in the set.
  • Gannon sprinted out to a 6-1 lead and later expanded it to 17-8. Edinboro woyuld chip into the lead, pulling to within 20-15 on a Burrelli kill and a Gannon hitting error. Burrelli and Jackson kills made it 22-18, but the Scots could get no closer, falling 25-19.
  • Gannon would tremendous hitting success in winning the third set 25-13 and the fourth 25-11. They would hit .375 in set three and .476 in set four, while Edinboro struggled in the final two sets. They led 11-5 midway through the third set, then went on to score eight of nine points to build a commanding 20-9 lead In set four Gannon pulled ahead 9-3 and Edinboro was unable to cut the deficit closer than four after that.                
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING   
  • Cierah Jackson led the Fighting Scots with 16 kills while leading the team in kills in 22 of 30 matches. She finishes her junior year with 1,131 kills, moving into eighth place in career kills. She had 388 kills this season, good for 14th in a season. She added 7 digs.       
  • Bella Burrelli concluded an outstanding freshman campaign with a double-double, totaling 15 kills and 15 digs, along with 3 service aces.
  • Molly Breier had a team-high 18 digs to bring her career total to 1,056. She moved past Stephanie Radecki into 12th place for career digs.
  • Alicia Eldredge led Edinboro in assists (36) and floor burns on Tuesday. The sophomore setter now has 1,967 assists, ranking 10th all-time. She ended the season with 1,051, which ranks 13th in a season.
  • Junior middle hitter Paige Morris contributed 6 kills and 3 block assists.
  • Edinboro hit .168 for the match while Gannon came in at a sizzling .363.
