Sharpe Leads Dominant Rebounding Effort but Edinboro Falls to Shepherd, 83-71

EDINBORO, Pa. – Cheniya Sharpe enjoyed a ferocious day on the glass, but it wasn't enough to help the Edinboro women's basketball team avoid an 83-71 loss to Shepherd on Saturday afternoon in the PSAC opener for both teams. The loss was the second straight for the Fighting Scots, who are now 1-2, while Shepherd is possibly the biggest surprise in the early going in the PSAC with a 6-0 record. The Rams were playing their first-ever PSAC game.

Sharpe pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds, including an incredible 13 on the offensive boards, and Michaela Barnes had a team-high 18 points to move into 15th place in career scoring with 1,333 points.

But the Fighting Scots had no answer all day long for Abby Beeman. The 5'4" freshman finished with 36 points, adding six rebounds and seven assists while playing all 40 minutes. She made 15-of-22 shots, including 5-of-7 3 pointers, and was 1-of-2 at the line.
Edinboro would hold a four-point lead late in the first quarter at 20-16, but Marley McLaughlin hit a 3-pointer right before buzzer to cut Edinboro's lead to 20-19 after one quarter.

The Rams would take the lead for good on another 3-pointer to start the second quarter, this one by Angela DeLorenzo, at 22-20. It was part of a 13-2 run by Shepherd for a 29-22 lead. The Rams' lead would grow to 11 points at 41-30, with Madison Amalia's jumper at the buzzer closing the gap to 41-32 at the half.

Shepherd would build its lead to 18 points at 52-34 with 6:42 left in the third period, but Edinboro would stage a comeback to close the gap to seven points at 63-56 after three periods. Monica Brown and Rana Elhusseini closed the quarter with three's.

Unfortunately, Edinboro would get no closer than that. Shepherd would build the lead back up to 11 points, but a Barnes basket and a pair of Elhusseini free throws made it 69-62 midway through the fourth quarter. Shepherd answered with a 10-3 run that featured seven points by Beeman.

Barnes battled foul trouble and was limited to just 24 minutes. The senior guard made 7-of-13 field goals, including her lone 3-point attempt, along with 3-of-6 free throws for her 18 points. Bridgette Shaffer added 16 points and eight rebounds. She made 6-of-12 field goals, including 4-of-8 three's. Freshman Elhusseini came off the bench to contribute a season-high 14 points, making 9-of-10 free throws.

In addition to Beeman, McLaughlin and Sydney Clayton were also in double figures as the trio combined for 73 points. McLaughlin had 21 points, making 10-of-16 free throws, with Clayton adding 16 points.

Edinboro finished the game shooting 37.7 percent (23-of-61), including 8-of-20 on 3-pointers, and was 17-of-22 at the line. Shepherd shot a hot 56.4 percent (31-of-55), making 10-of-17 3-pointers, and was 11-of-18 at the line.

Edinboro would dominate the glass, 42-26, with 21 offensive boards that led to a 22-6 advantage in second chance points. Edinboro committed 22 turnovers and Shepherd 17.

The Fighting Scots are right back in action on Sunday, playing their third game in five days. They host Shippensburg at 1 p.m.
