Wheeler Rides Bench to Big Win over Shippensburg

EDINBORO, Pa. – Playing for the third time in five days, and riding a two-game winning streak, Edinboro women's basketball head coach Callie Wheeler changed things up a bit on Saturday. The results were impressive, as the Fighting Scots pulled away from Shippensburg for a 77-65 win.  The victory evened Edinboro's record at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC. Shippensburg is 3-3 and 1-1, respectively.

The usual stalwarts – Michaela Barnes and Bridgette Shaffer – led the way, but it was the contributions made by the bench that really keyed the win. Shaffer led the way with her fifth career double-double, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds. She made 4-of-9 3-pointers. Barnes added 17 points, six rebounds, and four assists despite battling foul trouble for the second straight day. The senior guard moved into 14th place in career scoring with 1,350 points.

Edinboro's bench would outscore Shippensburg's, 33-18, with freshman Rana Elhusseini bouncing off the bench for 15 points and four assists. The diminutive guard made 4-of-9 shots, including a pair 3-pointers, and was 5-of-6 at the line.

Alexis Rodenbaugh, Emma Elash, and Abbey Antolic also played a huge role. Rodenbaugh, a junior transfer from Jamestown CC, had scored six points in the first three games, but would contribute seven points and two rebounds in 11 minutes. Elash, a freshman, played a season-high 19 minutes and finished with seven points and three rebounds. Antolic had played just seven minutes all year, but was ready when called upon. The redshirt junior played 23 minutes, with two points and three rebounds.

Edinboro shot 37.3 percent from the floor (25-of-67), making 11-of-31 3-pointers, and was a near-perfect 16-of-18 at the line. The Raiders shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58), making 4-of-25 3-pointers, and was 13-of-19 at the line.

Shippensburg held a 44-36 advantage on the glass, but the Fighting Scots forced 20 turnovers while committing 13. That led to a 19-9 advantage in points off turnovers.

Lauren Mills led Shippensburg with 16 points, one of three players in double figures. Aunbrielle Green added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Destiny Jefferson finished with 10 points. Edinboro held Ariel Jones, one of the top scorers in the country, to just one basket and three points.

The contest was tight through the first half, with Edinboro holding a tight 36-33 lead at the half. The half featured eight lead changes and five ties.  A Shaffer layup off a feed from Elhusseini gave Edinboro the lead for good at 31-29 with 3:56 remaining. Elhusseini followed with a 3-pointer.

Shippensburg cut the gap to a point at 38-37 early in the third quarter, but Edinboro ran off the next seven points to take control. Barnes scored all seven points with a pair of free throws, an three, and layup to make it 45-37 with 6:04 left in the period.

Edinboro's lead eventually grew to 12 points, and was 56-46 after three quarters. Shippensburg would open the fourth quarter with the first six points, but Wheeler called a timeout, and Edinboro responded with the next six points to rebuild the advantage to 10 points at 62-52.
Rodenbaugh accounted for four of the points on free throws, and Elhusseini scored on a short jumper.

Shippensburg would get no closer than five points the rest of the way.  That came at 66-61 with four minutes remaining. Edinboro closed with an 11-4 run to put the game away.

Edinboro does not return to the hardcourt until Tuesday, December 3 when Walsh visits McComb Fieldhouse.
