Kurt's Career-High 21 Points Not Enough in 81-65 Loss to Shippensburg

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro men's basketball team received a career-best effort from Turner Kurt, but the Fighting Scots would taste defeat for the first time in 2019-20 with an 81-65 loss to Shippensburg on Sunday afternoon. The Fighting Scots are now 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC, while Shippensburg improved to 5-1 and 2-0, respectively.

The Fighting Scots battled a highly-regarded Shippensburg team through over half of the second half before the Raiders would catch fire and pull away. The game featured eight ties and an incredible 20 lead changes as the two teams went back and forth.

Edinboro held a narrow 35-34 lead at the half while holding the Raiders to just 40.0 percent shooting from the floor (14-of-35). Kurt would account for 16 points for the Fighting Scots, making 4-of-7 3-pointers.

Neither team could gain much of an advantage over the first ten minutes of the second half, with Shippensburg holding just a 61-58 lead following a Daylon Harris 3-pointer with 8:41 remaining. The Raiders would ride a hot Jake Bliss the rest of the way. The junior guard scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the second half as the Raiders shot 63.0 percent (17-of-27) over the final twenty minutes.

Shippensburg would score seven straight points to take a 10-point lead at 68-58, and minutes later used an 8-0 run to finally put away as very game Edinboro squad.

Kurt would end the day with a career-high 21 points, making 5-of-10 3-pointers while shooting 8-of-14 overall. The 6'8" forward added five rebounds. Anthony Coleman added 13 points, all in the second half, along with five rebounds and four assists. Trey Staunch was also in double figures with 12 points, making 6-of-9 field goals.

Jaryn Simpson was limited to six points, but the junior guard matched his career high with 11 assists and had two steals. Alex Jay pu;;ed down a game-high10 rebounds.

A balanced Shippensburg squad played just seven players, but three scored in double digits. Bliss led the way with 24 points, adding seven assists. John Costello added 19 points and seven rebounds, and Carlos Carter had 17 points and seven boards.

Edinboro shot 44.1 percent from the floor (26-of-59), making 9-of-27 3-pointers. The Scots went to the line just five times, making four. Shippensburg rode the hot second half to finish at 50.0 percent (31-of-62), including 9-of-24 on 3-pointers. The Raiders were 10-of-12 at the line.

Edinboro held a narrow 34-32 lead in rebounding. The Fighting Scots committed 16 turnovers, nine of those in the second half, while Shippensburg was guilty of eight.

Edinboro is off for a week before hosting Lake Erie on Sunday, December 1.
