EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro men's basketball team fell victim to a hot-shooting Lake Erie squad on Sunday afternoon, falling by a 100-71 score at McComb Fieldhouse.  The loss was the second straight for the Fighting Scots as they fell to 4-2, while Lake Erie improved to 5-3.

The Storm got off to a hot start and never really cooled off, ending the day shooting 58.3 percent (35-of-60), including making 13-of-21 on 3-pointers. The Fighting Scots made 14-of-29 3-pointers and shot a respectable 45.3 percent from the floor (24-of-53). Lake Erie was 17-of-23 at the free throw line and Edinboro 9-of-13.

The Fighting Scots were also unable to overcome a 36-22 rebounding deficit, along with a 36-7 disadvantage in points off turnovers. Edinboro committed 19 turnovers while Lake Erie had 14.

Both teams finished three players scoring in double figures. Jaryn Simpson (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) led Edinboro with 20 points, making 5-of-8 3-pointers and 5-of-6 free throws. The junior guard added a team-high five rebounds. Alex Jay (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) added a  career-high 17 points on the strength of a 5-for-9 showing from beyond the arc, along with three blocked shots.  Anthony Coleman (Cleveland, Ohio/Willoughby South) added 16 points, making 3-of-6 3-pointers.  Steven Freeman (Cleveland, Ohio/Saint Martin de Porres)  dished out six assists.

Gabe Kynard paced Lake Erie with a game-high 31 points, adding seven rebounds. The senior guard made 10-of-13 field goals, including all three 3-point attempts, and was 8-of-8 at the line. Kaleb Vaughn added 13 points and nine rebounds, while Kevin Peterson contributed 11 points.

Edinboro would never lead in the contest as the Storm opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers. In fact, they made their first six shots to jump out to a 15-3 lead. Edinboro answered with three buckets by Coleman, including a pair of 3-pointers. Coleman would score Edinboro's first 11 points as the Fighting Scots pulled to within 15-11 with 13:49 left in the first half.

Lake Erie took control with the next nine points for a 24-11 lead. That was part of a 22-4 run that gave the Storm a 37-15 lead with just over eight minutes remaining.  Kynard had 21 of Lake Erie's first 34 points.

Edinboro would trail 48-29 at the half as Kynard had 23 points at intermission and Lake Erie shot 63.3 percent (19-of-30).  The Fighting Scots were unable to get any closer than 16 points in the second half.

The Lake Erie game was the last home contest for Edinboro in 2019. The Fighting Scots now play four straight games on the road, beginning with a PSAC crossover contest at Millersville on Saturday, December 7.  They do not play at McComb Fieldhouse again until January 6.
