Coleman Matches Career High with 32 Points, but Edinboro Falls in Overtime at Millersville, 91-83

MILLERSVILLE, Pa.Anthony Coleman matched his career high with 32 points, but the Edinboro men's basketball team saw Millersville rally late to send the game into overtime, then dominate the extra session to prevail 91-83. The loss was the third straight for the Fighting Scots as they fall to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in PSAC action. Millersville improved to 4-4 and 1-2, respectively.

Edinboro control of the game early and never trailed again until the overtime period. Millersville led just twice in regulation, the last time at 8-7 with 17:30 left in the first half. The Fighting Scots would use a 12-2 run to take a 14-point lead at 31-17.

They would lead by that margin on three occasions before the Marauders used a 14-2 run to cut the margin to 35-33 with 2:37 left. Thanks to a 7-2 run to close the half, Edinboro led 46-39.

Edinboro would maintain the lead throughout the second half, and used a 12-5 burst to boost the advantage to 75-64 with 4:05 remaining on a Coleman layup. That's when Millersville began its comeback, as Edinboro did not make another basket.

A string of 11 straight points knotted the score at 75-75 with 1:33 to play when Mekhi Hendricks scored on a layup. Alex Jay made a pair of free throws to give the lead back to the Scots with 39 seconds left. James Sullivan would come down and miss a jumper, but Millersville grabbed the rebound and Sullivan was fouled. He made both to tie the score at 77-77 with 11 seconds left. Edinboro's last possession resulted in a turnover just before the final buzzer.

Millersville regained the lead for the first time since the 17:30 mark of the first half as Sullivan made one of two free throws 24 seconds into overtime. Edinboro would never regain the lead again, as the Fighting Scots made just 1-of-8 shots in overtime, and made just one basket in the final nine minutes.

Jaryn Simpson scored all six of Edinboro's overtime points. The junior guard hit a jumper at the 3:23 mark for the only bucket of the period. He added four more free throws, the second pair pulling Edinboro to within 85-83 with 35 seconds left. Millersville answered with a Caden Najdawi dunk, and the Marauders made four more free throws to close out the rally.

Coleman would register his third career 30-point game, exploding in the first half for 24 points. The redshirt senior guard made 12-of-23 field goals, including 3-of-6 3-pointers, and was 5-of-5 at the line. He added seven rebounds.

Three other Scots scored in double digits. Daylon Harris came off the bench to score 15 points. The senior forward made his first seven shots, and added six rebounds. Trey Staunch contributed 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Simpson had 12 points and six rebounds.

All five sttarters scored in double figures for Millersville, with Sullivan leading the way with 31 points. He made 12-of-15 free throws. Justin Nwosu had 15 points and nine rebounds, while Najdawi had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Khari Williams scored 12 points, with Hendricks finishing with 11.

Despite going 1-of-8 in overtime, Edinboro still shot 50.0 percent from the floor (32-of-64), while making 4-of-15 3-pointers. Millersville came in at 41.7 percent from the floor (30-of-72), making 8-of-25 3-pointers. The Marauders enjoyed a large advantage at the line, making 23-of-32 free throws compared to 15-of-18 for Edinboro.

Turnovers also greatly impacted the Fighting Scots. They committed 22 miscues, while Millersville had 10. That led to a 20-9 deficit in points off turnovers. Edinboro held a slight 41-40 advantage on the glass.

The Fighting Scots will continue a four game road trip after taking this week off for final exams. The next play at East Stroudsburg on Friday, December 20.
