Edinboro Drops to 4-4 with Loss at East Stroudsburg

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – After opening the season with four straight wins, the Edinboro men's basketball team looks to snap a four-game losing streak after suffering an 85-41 loss at East Stroudsburg on Friday night. The loss leaves the Fighting Scots at 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the PSAC West. ESU improved to 6-3 and 2-2 in the PSAC East.

The Fighting Scots were forced to play without second-leading scorer and main ballhandler Jaryn Simpson, who was out with an injury. They were able to overcome his loss early on, but as the game wore on he was definitely missed.

Edinboro trailed by just a 20-15 margin over the first 12 minutes of the game, as Anthony Coleman accounted for 12 of those points. His 15-foot jumper and ensuing free throw capped a run of 10 straight points for the redshirt senior.

ESU would use an 11-2 run after that to open up a double-digit lead at 31-17. They would go on to lead 38-25 at the half. Incredibly, the Warriors made 15 baskets in the first half – seven 3-pointers and eight layups.

That would continue into the second half, as the Warriors' first 17 baskets were either three's or layups. After Montrel Morgan opened up the second half with a 3-pointer, Edinboro closed the gap to 41-30 on an Alex Jay three and Steven Freeman's layup. ESU would respond with an 18-5 burst to dash any Edinboro comeback hopes.

Edinboro would finish the night shooting 37.0 percent from the floor (20-of-54), making 4-of-18 3-pointers and 7-of-11 free throws. East Stroudsburg came in at 34.8 percent (33-of-72), but the Warriors made 11-of-29 3-pointers and went 8-of-12 from the charity stripe.

ESU held a 47-34 rebounding edge. In addition, as usual, the Warriors featured a pressing defense that forced Edinboro into 23 turnovers compared to 13. ESU would hold a 28-13 lead in points off turnovers, along with 44-24 on points in the paint.

Coleman would lead Edinboro with 17 points, with 15 of those in the first half. He added a team-high seven rebounds. Daylon Harris finished with eight points, while Alex Jay had seven points and six rebounds.

East Stroudsburg featured three players in double figures, with Michal Weiss turning in a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Marc Rodriguez added 14 points and Troy Jones totaled 10.

Edinboro will play its final game in 2019 on Saturday night at Kutztown. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
