Simpson Drains 3-Pointer in Final Second as Edinboro Shocks Shepherd, 73-72

EDINBORO, Pa. --- Jaryn Simpson hit a long 3-pointer from the top of the key with 0.8 seconds left lead Edinboro to a 73-72 win over Shepherd in the PSAC opener for both teams. Edinboro remained perfect at 4-0, the best start since the 2017-18 team opened at 4-0, as well. Shepherd was playing its first-ever PSAC contest, and saw its three-game winning streak snapped while falling to 3-2.

The game was incredibly close all afternoon long. It featured 16 lead changes and 12 ties. Neither team led by more than six points the entire day.

Shepherd appeared on its way to a fourth straight win with just seconds remaining. Edinboro would take its biggest lead of the afternoon at 69-64 on a Trey Staunch 3-point play with just under three minutes remaining. A minute later, Dan McClain-Corley cut the lead to 69-66, and the Rams knotted the game at 69-69 on a 3-pointer by Jon Preston with 54 seconds left.

The Fighting Scots grabbed a one-point lead with 17 seconds left as Daylon Harris made one-of-two free throws. Preston buried his fifth 3-pointer with six seconds left for a 72-70 lead, setting up the heroics for Simpson.

Edinboro would throw the ball to midcourt and call time out. The ball was inbound to Staunch, who at first had trouble giving the ball to Simpson. The junior guard finally got the ball, and would heave his game-winning shot from at least three feet beyond the arc, finding nothing but net. Shepherd's long inbounds pass was stolen by Simpson.

Harris would pace the Fighting Scots with a season-high 19 points while playing one of his top games as a Fighting Scot. The senior forward made 7-of-12 shots, including 3-of-6 3-pointers, while going 2-of-4 at the line to finish with 19 points in 19 minutes.

Harris led four Scots in double digits. Simpson and Staunch contributed 15 points with Anthony Coleman adding 10. Simpson made 3-of-6 three's and was 4-of-4 at the line. Staunch made 6-of-9 field goals and 3-of-3 free throws while adding a game-high eight rebounds. Coleman dished out seven assists, pulled down six rebounds, and had three steals.

Shepherd also had four players in double figures. Preston led the way, scoring 23 points while making 5-of-10 3-pointers. He added a team-high six rebounds. Thomas Lang added 15 points, followed by Jarrell Jones with 13 points and six rebounds, and Dan McClain-Corley with 10.

Edinboro shot 45.8 percent from the floor (27-of-59), making 12-of-28 3-pointers, and was 9-of-11 at the line. Shepherd went 26-of-59 from the floor (44.1 percent), making 14-of-33 3-pointers, and was 6-of-6 at the line. Both teams grabbed 33 rebounds, with Edinboro committing 12 turnovers and Shepherd 15. The Edinboro bench played a huge role, outscoring the Rs' reserves 23-2.

Edinboro doesn't have long to savor the win, as the Fighting Scots host Shippensburg on Sunday at 1 p.m.
