Chatten Records Hat Trick as Boro Loses Late at UPJ, 4-3

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – For the second straight match the Edinboro women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss in the final minute. Looking to clinch a first round home playoff game in the PSAC Tournament, the Fighting Scots dropped a 4-3 decision at Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday afternoon.

Edinboro is 9-5-3 overall and 9-3-3 in the PSAC West. UPJ finished its season at 7-11-0 and 6-10-0, respectively. The Mountain Cats avenged a 1-0 loss in overtime to Edinboro earlier in the season.

The Fighting Scots must now wait until Saturday, November 9 to secure a home playoff game when they host Seton Hill at 1 p.m. They have already clinched a PSAC Tournament berth for the first time since 2016, and are ranked sixth in the Atlantic Region in the latest NCAA regional rankings released earlier today. Edinboro has 30 points, while Mercyhurst boosted its total to 28 points with a win over Indiana(Pa.) today.

The back-and-forth match featured a hat trick by Danielle Chatten, as the senior forward accounted for all three of Edinboro's goals. It also saw Edinboro double UPJ in shots, 34-17. Chatten now has 26 career goals to move into a tie for 10th all-time, and her 67 career points rank 11th.

Edinboro would hold the lead at 1-0 and 2-1, but the Mountain Cats rallied to take a 3-2 lead. Chatten's third goal of the match and team-leading ninth of the season at the 78:37 mark tied the match at 3-3, and it appeared the Fighting Scots were headed for their seventh overtime contest of the year. The goal was assisted by Rebecca Manns, who moved into fifth place in career assists with 17.

Instead, with just 52 seconds remaining, Marisa Lizins scored her first goal of the season, with her shot rebounding off a Boro defender into the back of the net for the winning goal.

Edinboro opened the scoring behind the combination of Chatten and Manns. Chatten, a senior, scored her seventh goal of the season as she took a crossing pass from Manns to the right of the box, with her shot deflecting into the goal for the 1-0 lead at 11:29.

UPJ would knot the score at 1-1 with a goal at 23:33 by McKendra Walker. She scored her first goal of the season on a header off a corner kick from Kyra Watkins.

Chatten gave Edinboro the lead early in the second half as she took a ball into the box off a pass from the midfield by Mary Sinan and knocked it past UPJ goalkeeper Maria Mosquera. That made it 2-1 at the 50:04 mark.

Once again UPJ came back, this time with a pair of goals in a span of seven minutes to take a 3-2 lead. The Mountain Cats tied the score at 2-2 on Emily Esser's fifth goal of the season at 59:47. She gathered in a rebound and fired the ball beyond the reach of Anna Voelker. At 66:32, Watkins gave UPJ its first lead of the match at 3-2 with her third goal of the season, assisted by Danielle Lippl.

In addition to holding a 34-17 lead in shots, Edinboro had 16 shots on goal compared to 10 for UPJ. Both teams had 7 corner kicks. Voelker made 6 saves in goal for Edinboro. Despite being peppered by Boro shots all afternoon, Mosquera totaled 13 saves while playing her final match for UPJ.
