Voelker Ties Record for Season Shutouts as Fighting Scots Clinch #2 Seed with 2-0 Win over Seton Hill

EDINBORO, Pa. – On a bitterly cold day with snow surrounding the playing field, the Edinboro women's soccer team clinched the second seed in the PSAC West with a 2-0 shutout of visiting Seton Hill on Saturday afternoon at Sox Harrison Stadium. The victory boosted Edinboro to 10-5-3 overall and 10-3-3 in the PSAC west. Seton Hill's season concluded at 6-12-0 and 6-10-0, respectively.

Edinboro will now host Mercyhurst, the third seed, in the first round of the PSAC Tournament on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium. The Fighting scots won the first meeting between the two at Sox Harrison, 2-1, before battling to a 0-0 tie in two overtimes at Mercyhurst.

Edinboro snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory. The Fighting Scots came in ranked sixth in the second NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings released earlier this week, and are seventh in the United Soccer Coaches regional poll. They were picked to finish sixth in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll. They have now won 10-or-more matches 13 times in head coach Gary Kagiavas' 24 years at the helm.

Weather conditions were less than ideal for the final regular season game, with game-time temperatures in the low 30's and wind chills in the mid 20's.

Edinboro would take a 1-0 lead midway through the first half courtesy of a beautiful pass from Rebecca Manns. The redshirt junior had the ball on the right wing, dribbled in, then fed Brittnie Spithaler in front of the net. With the Seton Hill goalkeeper out of position. Spithaler found the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season. Manns now has seven assists.

The lead grew to 2-0 at the 32:45 mark on a goal by Marissa Zupen, the junior's first of the season. She took a short pass from Brittany Hurey from the right side of the post and chipped the ball into a wide-open net.

Neither team would score in the second half. Edinboro ended with a 16-12 advantage in shots, with sophomore goalkeeper Anna Voelker recording her seventh shutout of the season and 10th of her career. With her 10th win, she is tied for sixth in a season in wins, with the seven shutouts tying the school record. Her 10 career shutouts are tied for fifth. Elyza Pilatowski-Herzing played the first half in goal for the Griffins and had four saves, with Grace Kenyon plying the second half and recording two saves.
