Edinboro Wins Eighth Straight Season Opener with 95-72 Win over Thiel

  • The Short Story:  Anthony Coleman scored 23 of his 27 points in the first half, and backcourt partner had a big second half as Edinboro won its eighth straight season opener, 95-72 over visiting Thiel. It marked the 20th straight win for Edinboro over the Tomcats. After missing all but the first four games of the 2018-19 season with an injury, Coleman returned to make 10-of-16 shots, including 5-of-6 3-pointers. Simpson, meanwhile, ended the night with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. The Fighting scots had four double-figure scorers in all, with Trey Staunch scoring 11 points and Daylon Harris 10.  Edinboro grabbed the lead for good at 5-4 as Coleman scored Edinboro's first five points.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER BY THE NUMBERS
  • Edinboro shot 46.2 percent from the floor (30-of-65), going 10-of-23 on 3-pointers, and made 25-of-33 free throws. Thiel shot 39.3 percent from the floor (24-of-61), making 5-of-18 3-pointers, along with 19-of-28 free throws.
  • Thiel would end the game with just a one rebound deficit at 42-41 thanks to a big edge late in the game, but Edinboro ruled the boards most of the night. The Fighting Scots committed 15 turnovers compared to 22 for Thiel.         
  • Edinboro led by as much as 35 points on several occasions, the last at 85-50 with 7:42 remaining, before subs closed out the contest.  
  • Four Fighting Scots scored in double figures as all 12 players saw action, with 11 scoring.  Anthony Coleman made a triumphant return after missing most of the 2018-19 season with an injury. The 6'3" redshirt senior played in just four games. He came storming out with 23 points in the opening 20 minutes, making 9-of-14 shots, including 4-of-5 3-pointers. Coleman would end the ight with a game-high 27 points, making 10-of-16 field, including 5-of-6 3-pointers, along with 2-of-3 free throws. He added five rebounds while playing just 21 minutes.
  • Jaryn Simpson earned second team All-PSAC West honors a year ago when he averaged 18.0 ppg. The 6'3" junior turned in a strong all-around performance in the opener, contributing 16 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Simpson made 5-of-9 shots, including a 3-of-7 showing from beyond the 3-point line, and was 3-of-5 at the line. He committed just one turnover.
  • Trey Staunch and Daylon Harris were also in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Staunch was 5-of-6 at the line and added 6 rebounds, while Harris was a perfect 4-for-4 at the charity stripe and pulled down 5 boards.
  • Freshman Jack Gallagher and senior Steven Freeman contributed 7 points apiece off the bench. Gallagher was 5-of-6 at the line. Anthony Allen provided a boost inside with 6 points and 5 rebounds in 15 minutes. Alex Jay also had 6 points.
  • Thiel had two players in double figures, with Chima Omeihe coming off the bench for 13 points and Daquan Simmons adding 11. Three Tomcats – Ahmad Tejumola, Beni Lavodrama, and Omeihe – had a team-high 7 rebounds.                     
NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS
  • Edinboro makes the quick turnaround, playing at Cleveland State on Saturday, November 9. The contest serves as an exhibition game but is a regular season contest for the Vikings. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at the Wolstein Center.
