MATCH STORYLINES
  • After taking a break for final exams, Edinboro will wrap up the 2019 portion of its schedule with four matches in a span of three days. The Fighting Scots host George Mason in a Mid-American Conference match on Friday, with the match taking place at a special team and location. The wrestling will get underway at 12 noon in the Zafirovski Sports & Recreation Dome.
  • Following the dual with George Mason, Edinboro will compete in the Mountaineer Quad on Sunday, December 22. The Fighting Scots will wrestle three times in the West Virginia Coliseum. At 2 p.m., they face Hofstra. That will be followed by a match with VMI, and the day wraps up with a meeting against West Virginia and former head coach Tim Flynn.
  • Both Edinboro and George Mason joined the Mid-American Conference after previously competing in the Eastern Wrestling League. Both also come in with 5-1 records overall, with the Fighting Scots 2-0 in MAC competition and the Patriots 1-0. Edinboro has defeated Kent State (29-6) and Ohio (25-7, while George Mason owns a 19-18 win over Clarion. The two have faced one common opponent – Long Island. Edinboro defeated LIU 51-0, while GMU won 43-6. Edinboro's lone loss came to seventh-ranked Wisconsin, 28-15.
  • Earlier this year, the Mid-American Conference announced the addition of the seven Eastern Wrestling League members, including Edinboro, as affiliate members. The move brought the MAC to 15 teams, the second-largest wrestling conference in Division I.
  • Head coach Matt Hill, a former Edinboro standout, is in his second season in charge at his alma mater. He previously spent 11 years as an assistant coach at Kent State. Hill faced a major rebuilding project a year ago after five national qualifiers transferred following the departure of head coach Tim Flynn to West Virginia. Hill's first edition finished 2-9 in duals and placed fourth at the EWL Championships.
  • Edinboro is currently ranked ninth in the MAC Coaches December Rankings. George Mason comes in tied for tenth with Ohio. Three Fighting Scots are ranked in the individual weight class rankings, led by Jacob Oliver. The redshirt sophomore is ranked second at 174 lbs. and comes in with a 10-3 record.  Jon Spaulding (10-4) is third at heavyweight, while freshman Tye Varndell (9-5) is fifth at 133 lbs.  George Mason has a pair of wrestlers in the poll. Colston DiBlasi (13-7) is third at 149 lbs., and Cornelius Schuster is third at 165 lbs.
  • Jacob Oliver was named the MAC Eastern Division Wrestler of the Week after winning the championship at 174 lbs. at the recent Navy Classic. The redshirt sophomore was Edinboro's lone wrestler to qualify for Nationals a year ago, finishing at 28-7. He is off to a 10-3 start.
  • When Edinboro's Tye Varndell and GMU's Josh Jones take to the mat at 133 lbs., it will be a rematch of last year's PIAA Class AA championship bout at 132 lbs. Jones, wrestling for Saucon Valley High School, would claim a 7-3 decision over Varndell, who was wrestling for nearby Cambridge Springs High School.
