Boro Comeback Bid at Millersville Comes Up Short Despite 31 Points from Barnes

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team opened up a five-game road swing with an 85-78 loss at Millersville on Saturday afternoon in a PSAC crossover contest. The loss leaves the Fighting Scots at 2-4 overall and 1-2 in PSAC action, while Millersville is also 2-4 and 1-2, respectively.

The contest featured two of the leading scorers in the PSAC, and neither disappointed. In fact, both finished the day with 31 points. Michaela Barnes had her second straight and fifth career 30-point game to lead the Fighting Scots, as she also had 31 points on Tuesday vs. Walsh. The senior guard boosted her career total to 1,412 points to move up two spots into tenth place in career scoring. Barnes made 9-of-21 field goals, including 3-of-10 3-pointers, and was 10-of-12 at the line. She added six rebounds and four assists.

Millersville's Lauren Lister came in as the conference's leading scorer and also scored 31 points. Like Barnes, she did plenty of damage at the line, making 10-of-11 from the charity stripe. She added nine rebounds and seven assists.

Edinboro had two other players in double figures as Bridgette Shaffer scored a career-high 23 points and Bella Burrelli added 12 points. The trio combined for 66 of Edinboro's 78 points. Shaffer made 9-of-17 field goals, including 5-of-12 3-pointers, and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Burrelli, a freshman in just her second game with the basketball team after playing volleyball, made 5-of-10 field goals and 2-of-4 free throws for a season-high 12 points.

Millersville also had three players in double figures, with Olivia Mottern adding 20 points and Courtney Dimoff finishing with a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Edinboro shot 36.1 percent from the floor (26-of-72), while Millersville came in at 45.9 percent (28-of-61). The Fighting Scots converted 10-of-32 3-pointers and went 16-of-20 at the line. Millersville, meanwhile, came in at 8-of-24 from beyond the arc and was a near-perfect 21-of-22 at the line. Millersville held a 45-36 rebounding advantage, while Edinboro forced the Marauders into 25 turnovers while committing 22.

Edinboro had won the last seven meetings with the Marauders, and made a run in the fourth to try to extend it to eight in a row. The Fighting Scots made two runs at the Marauders after trailing 62-50 heading into the final period. A pair of Shaffer 3-pointers pulled the Fighting Scots to within six at 65-59 with 6:04 remaining, but Millersville scored the next six points to build the lead back to 12.

Trailing 75-61 with 3:34 left, the Fighting Scots would again close to six. That occurred when Barnes hit a 3-pointer to make it 81-75, but just 29 seconds remained. The Marauders made four straight free throws to hold off Edinboro's comeback.

Barnes opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, but Edinboro would lead just one more time in the first half. That came at 6-5 on another Barnes three. Dimoff answered with a 3-pointer for the Marauders for an 8-6 lead. Millersville would hold a 21-16 lead after one quarter.

The Fighting Scots got off to a slow start in the second quarter, but would pull to within seven at the half. Millersville scored the first 12 points of the second quarter to build a 17-point lead at 33-16 with 6:43 left in the half. The Fighting Scots responded with a late run, scoring the final five points on a 3-pointer by Emma Elash and a layup by Bridgette Shaffer to cut the gap to 39-32.

Millersville outscored the Fighting Scots, 23-18, in the third quarter, to build a 62-50 lead with ten minutes remaining. Edinboro pulled to within four points at 41-37 thanks to a Barnes jumper and a 3-point play by the senior guard.  The Marauders again spurted to build a 58-40 advantage, part of a 12-0 run. Back came the Scots, closing the gap to 12.

Edinboro will stay in the eastern part of the state for a contest on Sunday at Cheyney. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
