Fighting Scots Continue Dominance over Seton Hill Thanks to Overpowering Second Quarter

The Short Story: Edinboro outscored Seton Hill 29-8 in the second quarter, and never trailed over the final 20 minutes while moving closer to clinching a PSAC playoff spot. The win gives Edinboro a three-game lead over Seton Hill for the third spot in the PSAC West. Following the fifth tie of the game at 25-25, the Fighting Scots rode a 15-2 run and would eventually lead 49-31 at the half.  The Fighting Scots shot a sizzling 68.4 percent from the floor in the second quarter, making 13-of-19 shots. The Griffins would chip away at the deficit in the third quarter, pulling to within 54-48 with just over five minutes remaining. However, Edinboro would build the lead back up to 70-53 after three periods thanks to a 16-5 run. Seton Hill would pull to within eight points on two occasions in the fourth quarter, but a 10-0 Fighting Scot finally put the Griffins away. A trio of Fighting Scots combined for 73 of the team's 88 points. Ciara Rosten scored a season-high 27 points while collecting 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Michaela Barnes and Jontay Walton each added 23 points. The game featured five ties and seven lead changes before Edinboro took control. The Fighting Scots would outscore Seton Hill 44-30 in the paint. They are now 20-1 all-time against the Griffins.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Seton Hill led 23-20 after the first quarter, but Jontay Walton had a strong opening 10 minutes for the Fighting Scots. The 5'6" guard scored 11 points in the frame on 5-of-6 shooting, including 1-for-1 from behind the arc.
  • There were two ties and one lead change over the first two minutes of the second period. However, a Walton jumper with 7:58 remaining would be the start of a 15-2 scoring run for the Fighting Scots. Ciara Rosten scored a layup, followed by a layup from Seton Hill's Taylin Taylor. Edinboro would proceed to score the next 11 points spanning 3:14. Abbey Antolic connected on a jumper, Walton and Monica Brown had back-to-back layups. Bridgette Shaffer capped off the run with a 3-pointer.
  • Michaela Barnes beat the buzzer as Edinboro went into halftime up 49-31. The Fighting Scots shot a 68.4 percent clip (13-of-19) in the second period. while holding Seton Hill to 3-of-12 (25 pct.). Overall, Edinboro shot 60.0 percent (21-of-35) overall, while holding Seton Hill to 34.4 percent (11-of-32) shooting.
  • Walton, Rosten, and Barnes had strong performances over the opening two periods. Walton led players at the half with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Rosten went 6-of-9 from the field for 14 points, while also grabbing four rebounds and recording four steals. Barnes was 4-of-8 for eight points, to go with three boards and a pair of steals.
  • Seton Hill used a strong start the third period to cut the deficit from 19 points down to six, thanks to a 17-5 run over the first five minutes of the quarter. Following a timeout, the Scots shifted the momentum back in their direction, as they outscored Seton Hill, 16-5 over the final 4:50. Edinboro stepped up on the defensive end during that run, limiting the Griffins to 1-of-9 from the field.
  • Edinboro led 70-53 entering the fourth period, but Seton Hill trimmed the lead down to eight points on two occasions over the first three-and-a-half minutes. The Fighting Scots would once embark on a 10-0 run, holding the Griffins to 0-for-6 in the process.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Edinboro shot 50.7 percent (35-of-69) overall, including 7-of-17 on 3-pointers, and 11-of-13 on free throws. Seton Hill was held to a 37.7 percent clip (26-of-69). The Griffins were 7-of-30 from long range and 9-of-12 at the foul line.
  • Edinboro won the battle of the boards, 44-35. The Fighting Scots also dominated points in the paint, 44-30, and had a 16-3 advantage in second-chance points. Both teams totaled five ties and seven lead changes.
  • A trio of Fighting Scots scored 20+ points in the contest. Ciara Rosten paced the Fighting Scots with a season-high 27 points, including 14 in the first two quarters. She also brought down 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the campaign. The 6'2" forward shot 10-of-20 from the field, including 3-of-5 on her 3-pointers and went 4-of-4 on her free throws. Her four steals were a season-high, in addition to dishing out four assists and recording two steals.
  • Jontay Walton shot 10-of-14 from the floor and 2-of-3 at the line for 23 points. The graduate student also had three steals and committed just two turnovers in 34 minutes.
  • Michaela Barnes also contributed 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting, including her lone 3-pointer attempted at a pair of free throws. She passed out a team-high five assists and had three steals.
  • Bridgette Shaffer played a key role in Edinboro winning the rebounding battle. She grabbed eight rebounds, while also scoring six points.
  • Monica Brown also played an integral role in shutting down Seton Hill's offense. In 14 minutes, the freshman guard scored three points, collected three boards, and blocked one shot.
  • Seton Hill had three scorers in double figures. Megan Marecic led the Griffins with 16 points, to go with seven rebounds, four assists, three steals, two blocks, and two turnovers in 26 minutes.
  • Lexi Civittolo made 6-of-9 baskets for 14 points and recorded three steals. Cheyenne Trest added 10 points and five rebounds.
  • Katie Nolan nearly finished with a double-double, contributing nine points and eight rebounds.
NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS
  • Edinboro plays its next two contests on the road, beginning on Saturday, February 16 at Gannon. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
  • The Lady Knights won the first meeting at McComb Fieldhouse, as the Fighting Scots lost their first home game of the campaign in a 71-57 decision.
