Brown, Young Score Season High's to Help Edinboro Clinch its Tenth Straight PSAC Tournament Berth

The Short Story: Freshmen Monica Brown and Lillian Young scored a season-high in points to help Edinboro clinch its tenth consecutive PSAC Tournament berth. Edinboro trailed 23-15 after the first quarter, but the Fighting Scots shut down Gannon defensively over the final 30 minutes. The Fighting Scots took the lead for good on an 8-0 run spanning nearly five minutes in the second quarter. Jontay Walton made  two 3-pointers in that stretch, and it would be her second basket from long range that put the Fighting Scots up for good. Gannon came to within four points twice in the fourth quarter, but a 7-0 run spanning between the third and fourth period helped Edinboro cushion its lead. Michaela Barnes scored a game-high 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting, while Walton contributed 17 points. Young scored 13 points on 6-of-9 field goals and Brown made 3-of-4 baskets, including 2-of-3 3-pointers for 12 points. Michelle Jahn came off the bench for the first time this season to help the Scots on the glass, adding six rebounds and scoring eight points. Edinboro was without its second-leading rebounder Bridgette Shaffer, who was out due to illness. The Fighting Scots were a perfect 16-of-16 at the foul line, behind 4- of -4 makes by Barnes, Brown, Jahn, and Walton. Ciara Rosten flirted with a triple-double, adding eight points and 10 rebounds, to go with a game-high six assists and four blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro trailed 23-15 after 10 minutes. The Fighting Scots struggled from the floor, shooting 7-of-18 (38.9 .), but got into a groove in the second period. Down 27-21, a 10-0 run spanning nearly five minutes would put Edinboro on top the rest of the way. Michelle Jahn started the run with a , followed by back-to-back 3-pointers from Jontay Walton. Michaela Barnes laid in a basket to cap the run.
  • The Fighting Scots outscored the Lady Knights, 18-8 in the second period. Edinboro had a strong defensive performance in the quarter, limiting Gannon to 2-of-9 from the floor. In addition, the Scots forced the Lady Knights into eight turnovers, which led to 14 points.
  • Edinboro increased its lead to 10 points at 41-31 with the first eight points of the third quarter. Barnes and Monica Brown each drilled a 3-pointer, while Lillian Young scooped in a basket.
  • Later in the frame, Edinboro had its biggest lead thus far of 14 points at 52-38. Gannon would reply, using a 10-0 run to trim the Fighting Scots lead down to four points for the second time in the period.
  • Young would drill a 3-pointer with eight seconds left in the third to put Edinboro up 55-48. The Fighting Scots would score the first four points of the final quarter for a 7-0 run. Back-to-back jumpers from Young and Barnes put Edinboro back up by double digits.
  • Gannon was down by single digits on various occasions in the fourth quarter. The closest they got was within seven points with 1:01 left.
  • Edinboro's offense was potent over the final 10 minutes, as the Scots shot a sizzling 75.0 percent (6-of-8) and were perfect at the charity stripe making 12-of-12 free throws. 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Edinboro shot 46.7 percent (28-of-60) overall, including 51.9 percent (14-of-27) over the final 20 minutes. The Fighting Scots connected on 7-of-16 3-pointers and were a perfect 16-of-16 at the free throw line. Gannon shot 38.9 percent (21-of-54), to go with 7-of-19 3-pointers and 17-of-27 free throws.
  • Gannon won the rebounding battle, 34-33, but the Fighting Scots did the work without the team's second-leading rebounder Bridget Shaffer. The redshirt junior is averaging 7.0 rebounds per game. Edinboro had a 31-10 advantage in points off turnovers. The Fighting Scots scored 14 of those points in the second quarter alone. The Fighting Scots forced Gannon into 19 mistakes, while they gave up the ball 14 times. Edinboro also dominated in the paint, 36-26.
  • Michaela Barnes led a quartet of Fighting Scots in double figures. She shot 8-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the charity stripe for a game-high 21 points. The 5'5" guard added four assists and two steals. 
  • Jontay Walton contributed 17 points. She made 5-of-10 field goals, but got hot from three-point territory. The graduate student made 3-of-4 3-pointers, to go with 4-of-4 free throws, while adding a game-high three steals. 
  • Freshmen Lillian Young and Monica Brown played a key role in the win, as each finished with a season-high in points. Young scored 14 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor, to go with four rebounds and a steal. Brown shot 3-of-4 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from long range and 4-of-4 at the line for 12 points.
  • Ciara Rosten nearly finished with a double-doube with eight points and 10 rebounds. She added a game-high six assists and four blocks. Michelle Jahn came off the bench for the first time this season. She scored eight points and brought down six boards.
  • Tori Obenrader led Gannon with a double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing 17 boards. She shot 6-of-11 from the field, 3-of-6 from behind the arc and 5-of-6 free throws. Chelsea Rourke contributed 13 points, while Sydney Mitchell and Nicole LaCava added 11 and 10 points, respectively. She also blocked four shots. 
NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS
  • Edinboro heads to Slippery Rock on Wednesday, February 20, with a 5:30 p.m tip-off.
