Owens, Simpson Power Edinboro to 74-67 Overtime Win at Gannon

THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  Edinboro 74, Gannon 67 OT

  • The Short Story:  DeAnthony Owen sent the game into overtime with a layup with two seconds remaining, and Jaryn Simpson took over from there, scoring 10 points in overtime to lead Edinboro to a split of the season series with the Golden Knights. The contest was tight throughout, with 15 lead changes and seven ties. Edinboro would grab a 10-point lead at 20-10 midway through the first half, but Gannon would claim a six-point lead on three occasions in the second half. Edinboro still trailed by five points with two-and-a-half minutes remaining at 60-55, but the Fighting Scots would close regulation on a 6-1 run. They never trailed in overtime, scoring the first four points of the extra session. Simpson would make two long 3-pointers in overtime and would finish the game with 20 points. Owens added 18 points as Edinboro has now won three of ots last four games.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro rode a 10-0 run to a 20-10 lead midway through the first half. DeAnthony Owens and Jaryn Simpson got the run started with 3-pointers, and Trey Staunch followed with a pair of layups.  The Fighting Scots held Gannon scoreless for over six minutes, but Gannon would run off the next seven points and eventually took a 24-23 lead with 3:25 remaining in the first half.
  • Simpson's jumper and a free throw in the final minute gave Edinboro a narrow 30-28 lead at the half.
  • Gannon would score the first eight points of the second half to take a 36-30 lead. All four baskets were layups. 
  • The Golden Knights still held a six-point lead at 43-37 with just under 14 minutes remaining, but Edinboro ran off the next seven points to reclaim the lead at 44-43 midway through the half. Owens accounted for the final five points.
  • After Gannon came back to claim a 47-44 advantage, the two teams would go almost six minutes with neither team leading by more than a point as the lead changed hands eight times.
  • Trailing 55-53 with five minutes to play, Gannon went on a 7-0 run to take a 60-55 lead with 2:37 remaining. Sean Colosimo scored on a layup, and Victor Olawoye hit a 3-pointer and scored on a layup.
  • Edinboro would close to 60-57 on Daylon Harris' layup, and after Olawoye made one of two free throws, Owens pulled the Fighting Scots to within 61-59 on a jumper with 43 seconds left. Gannon came down and missed, with Staunch grabbing the rebound. Edinboro would inbound under its basket with five seconds to play. Owens soared high to pull in the pass from Alex Jay, then laid the ball in with two seconds left to send the game into overtime.
  • The extra five minutes belonged to Edinboro. The Fighting Scots would make 4-of-5 shots, beginning with Simpson's 3-pointer following a Gannon miss. Jay would make one-of-two free throws for a 65-61 lead, but Olawoye answered with a pair of free throws to cut Edinboro's lead in half with 2:43 remaining.
  • Simpson would bury another three with just over two minutes to play, this one from well behind the line with the shot clock under two seconds. It left Edinboro with a 68-63 lead.
  • Olawoye's layup cut the Boro lead to 68-65, but Owens tipped in a Staunch miss with 1:26 remaining to boost the lead back to 70-65. Gannon would misfire, and Simpson's jumper boosted the lead to 72-65 with 50 seconds left.
  • Joe Fustine would hit a jumper in the paint 15 seconds later, but Simpson clinched the win with two more free throws.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Edinboro shot 49.1 percent from the floor (26-of-53), going 8-of-28 on 3-pointers, and made 14-of-18 free throws. Gannon shot 41.3 percent from the floor (26-of-63), making 4-of-20 3-pointers, along with 11-of-14 free throws.
  • Edinboro made 4-of-5 shots in overtime and went 3-for-4 at the line. The Golden Knights made just 2-of-7 field goals along with both free throw attempts.
  • While Gannon would hold a 36-32 advantage on the glass, the Fighting Scots battled on an even basis most of the game against one of the PSAC's top rebounding teams. Edinboro committed 11 turnovers, but just four in the second half and overtime, while Gannon had nine turnovers.
  • Three Fighting Scots scored in double figures, led by Jaryn Simpson with 20 points. The sophomore guard was limited to 10 points in regulation, but would score 10 of Edinboro's 13 points in overtime.  He made 6-of-14 field goals, including 3-of-9 3-pointers, and was 5-for-6 at the line. Simpson turned in his strong effort while playing on the same court that his father, Bronze Simpson, played on as a standout at Gannon. He would play all 45 minutes.
  • DeAnthony Owens chipped in with 18 points, including the basket that sent the game into overtime. The junior guard made 8-of-12 field goals, connecting on all seven 2-point field goals, and was 1-of-1 at the line. He added six rebounds.
  • Trey Staunch battled a bigger Gannon lineup inside and finished with a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. He made 4-of-7 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws.
  • Daylon Harris contributed nine points, with Turner Kurt finishing with seven points and four rebounds. Alex Jay added five rebounds.
  • After burning Edinboro for 23 points in the first meeting, Victor Olawoye finished with 23 points in the second meeting to lead Gannon. The freshman guard added seven rebounds.
  • Joe Fustine added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Knights, while Sean Colosimo also scored 11 points. Matt Johnson finished with 10 points.
NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS
  • Edinboro wraps up a stretch of three road games in four contests on Wednesday, February 20 playing at Slippery Rock. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
  • Slippery Rock has already clinched a berth in the PSAC Tournament and claimed an 88-71 decision in the first meeting with Edinboro.
