Edinboro Wins See-Saw Affair with Clarion in Overtime, 90-86

THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  Edinboro 90, Clarion 86  OT

  • Location:  Edinboro, Pa. – Morrow Fieldhouse
  • The Short Story:  Edinboro kept its postseason hopes alive and was finally able to put away the Golden Eagles in overtime in a game that featured 14 ties and seven lead changes. It was the second overtime win in the last three games. The Fighting Scots looked ready to run away with the win with a 15-point lead at 63-48 with just over eight minutes to play.  Four minutes later, Clarion used a 15-1 run to close to within 64-62. The Golden Eagles eventually went up 75-72 on a pair of Elijah Cottrill free throws with 24 seconds left. Jaryn Simpson ultimately sent the game into overtime tied at 77 with a pair of free throws with 1.3 seconds left. Clarion took an early three-point lead, but a 7-1 run gave the Scots the lead for good. Turner Kurt gave Edinboro the lead for good at 83-81 with three minutes left with a 3-pointer. Simpson converted another 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to clinch the win. The sophomore guard would finish with 25 points, his 11th game with 20-or-more points. Trey Staunch had a career-high 23 points and matched his career-high with 12 rebounds.  
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro and Clarion would battle through 14 ties and seven lead changes.  The Fighting Scots closed the first half with a 10-2 run to build a 36-30 lead at intermission. That lead would grow to 39-32 early in the second half, but Clarion ran off the next seven points.
  • DeAnthony Owens broke the tie with a 3-pointer, starting the Scots on a 14-3 run highlighted by eight points from Owens.
  • Edinboro's lead would grow to 15 points at 63-48 with 8:18 remaining on a 4-point play by Simpson. Clarion proceeded to score 14 of the next 15 points over the next four minutes and the Golden Eagles suddenly trailed 64-62.
  • With Edinboro holding a 70-67 lead, Khari Williams hit a three to start a 6-0 run for Clarion. The Golden Eagles led 73-70 with 35 seconds left. Clarion still led by three at 75-72 with 24 seconds left, but Simpson's 3-pointer knotted the score at 75-75 with 19 ticks showing. Elijah Cottrill took the inbounds pass and raced downcourt for a layup. Simpson was fouled with 1.3 seconds remaining. The PSAC's leading free throw shooter made both free throws to tie the game at 77-77, sending the game into overtime.
  • Williams and Kameron King, who came into the game when Owens went out with an injury late in regulation. Lawrence Lemon made 1-of-2 free throws, but Turner Kurt stepped up and hit a three to give Edinboro the lead for good at 83-81 with three minutes left. It marked the second time this year the freshman forward hit a late three against Clarion.
  • Kurt would make 2-of-4 free throws in overtime, and Simpson buried a 3-pointer with 10 seconds to go for a seemingly safe 88-83 lead. However, Cottrill hit a 3-pointer from well behind the arc to make it 88-86  with three seconds to play. King, a freshman forward, calmly stepped to the line and hit two free throws to clinch the victory. He finished with five points, all in overtime.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Edinboro shot 46.7 percent from the floor (28-of-60), making 10-of-25 3-pointers, and went 24-of-31 free throws. Clarion shot a similar 46.3 percent from the floor (31-of-67), making 11-of-30 3-pointers, and was 13-of-19 at the line.        
  • The two teams battled to a stalemate on th glass, each team pulling down 37 rebounds. Edinboro committed 13 turnovers while Clarion had 15.      
  • Four Fighting Scots scored in double figures, with Jaryn Simpson battling an injury to finish with 25 points. The sophomore guard made 8-of-18 field goals, including 4-of-11 3-pointers, and was 5-of-6 at the line. He added seven assists and four rebounds. Simpson has now had 11 games with 20-or-more points.
  • Trey Staunch scored a career-high 23 points and matched his career-best with 12 rebounds. He made 7-of-11 field goals and was a perfect 9-for-9 at the line. He also contributed six assists.
  • DeAnthony Owens came off the bench to score 14 points, but the junior guard would exit with an injury late in regulation. Turner Kurt finished with 10 points, making 2-of-5 3-pointers.
  • Clarion had four players reach double digits, as well, accounting for 76 points. Elijah Cottrill paced the Golden Eagles with 24 points, making 5-of-7 3-pointers, along with pulling down nine rebounds. Khari Williams pitched in with 23 points, making 4-of-11 3-pointers, along with five assists. Jonathan Williams finished with 17 points before fouling out, and Lawrence Lemon had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

  • Edinboro will celebrate Senior Day on Wednesday, February 27, hosting second-ranked Indiana(Pa.). The contest tips off at 7:30 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
