Edinboro Wins Fifth Straight Game with 88-69 Triumph over Clarion on Hoops for Harlie Day

  • The Short Story:  Edinboro won its fifth straight game and for the ninth time in the last ten games while enjoying an outstanding shooting outing. The Fighting Scots would shoot 55.2 percent from the floor (37-of-67), including 66.7 percent in the first half (22-of-33) when they would jump out to a 50-23 lead. The advantage would grow to as many as 29 points in the second half, and Clarion never got closer than 16. Michaela Barnes recorded her fifth straight game with 20-or-more points and also had her first career double-double, totaling 24 points and 10 rebounds, along with eight assists. Ciara Rosten added 22 points. Edinboro is now within one win of a ninth straight 20-win campaign. The Fighting Scots entered the contest ranked sixth in the NCAA's initial Atlantic Region poll. Today was Edinboro's annual Hoops for Harlie Day, with funds raised today going to the Halos for Harlie Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro jumped out to a 26-11 lead after one period while making 12-of-18 shots. The Fighting Scots held a narrow 13-9 advantage midway through the quarter before going on a 13-2 run to end the period.
  • The Fighting Scots would shoot 66.7 percent in the second quarter, as well, making 10-of-15 shots. They would outscore the Golden eagles, 24-12, to go on top 50-23 at intermission. The first half featured Edinboro hold a 32-6 advantage in points in the paint.
  • Edinboro would boost the lead to 29 points on three occasions in the third period, the last at 68-39 with just over two minutes to play. A late Clarion run would pull the Golden Eagles to within 22 at 70-48 after three quarters. Clarion eventually got as close as 16 points at 81-65 with four minutes to play. That's when Michelle Jahn scored on a drive, followed by a short jumper by Barnes, and a 3-point play by Rosten to build Edinboro's advantage back up to 88-65 with 1:26 to play.
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Edinboro finished the game shooting 55.2 percent from the floor (37-of-67), the second-highest figure of the season. That included an 8-for-22 chart on 3-pointers. The Fighting Scots made 6-of-9 free throws. Clarion ended the day at 43.1 percent (25-of-58), making 5-of-12 3-pointers, and went 14-of-16 at the charity stripe.     
  • Clarion held a slight 34-31 advantage on the glass, but the Fighting Scots forced 17 turnovers while committing a season-low seven.
  • Edinboro held a 54-30 advantage in points in the paint and a 25-7 edge in points off turnovers.            
  • Michaela Barnes paced three players in double figures as the junior guard had her fifth straight game with 20-or-more points, totaling 24. She added a career-high 10 rebounds for her first double-double, and fell just two assists shy of a triple-double with eight assists. Barnes made 11-of-17 field goal attempts and was 2-of-2 at the line.
  • Ciara Rosten made 10-of-17 shots and ended the day with 2 points, along with six rebounds and four assists. Bridgette Shaffer parlayed a 4-of-6 effort on 3-pointers to total 16 points, adding six rebounds.
  • Jontay Walton was held to eight points, as a streak of 40 straight games in double figures came to an end. However, the senior guard had eight assists without a turnover along with three steals.
  • The foursome of Michelle Jahn, Walton, Barnes, and Rosten continued to add to their impressive career totals. Jahn scored eight points and has now moved into 13th place in career scoring with 1,345 points. Walton has 1,274 points, good for 17th, while Barnes sits at 1,192 career points, which is 23rd. Rosten has 1,144 points, ranking 29th.   
NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS 
  • The Fighting Scots will celebrate Senior Day on Wednesday, February 27, recognizing Michelle Jahn, Ciara Rosten, Jontay Walton, and Allison Thompson. Third-ranked Indiana(Pa.) will provide the opposition, with tipoff set at 5:30 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.      
  • IUP is ranked first in the NCAA Atlantic Region rankings, while Edinboro is sixth. The Crimson Hawks claimed a 97-73 win in the first meeting.
