Freeman, Freshmen Tandem Lead Fighting Scots to Comeback Win at California(Pa.)

  • The Short Story:  Edinboro jumped out to a 15-point lead at 30-15 in the first half. But the Vulcans used a 26-4 run between the first half and beginning of the second half to reclaim the lead at 33-32. Steven Freeman Turner Kurt paced the Fighting Scots with 16 and 13 points, respectively in the second half. Freeman gave the Scots the lead for good with a 3-pointer at 3:12 to go on top 69-68. He scored 11 points over the final 5:56. Four Fighting Scots scored in double figures. Freeman contributed a season-high 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting and 6-of-9 free throws in 20 minutes off the bench. Kurt finished with 17 points, just one point shy of tying his season-high in points. Trey Staunch posted his third double-double of the campaign with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Jaryn Simpson scored 13 points. Edinboro fell one 3-pointer shy of tying its season-best with 13. Kameron King added seven points and two steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro led by as much as 15 points in the first half at 30-15 with 7:43 remaining until halftime. California(Pa.) held the Fighting Scots to just two points. The Vulcans used a 9-0 run to cut the defect to six points.
  • A Steven Freeman layup at the 2:00 mark would be Edinboro's first points in over five minutes. Cal U scored the final five points of the half, but the Fighting Scots led 32-29 at the half.
  • The Fighting Scots had a strong performance from behind the arc over the first 20 minutes. While Edinboro shot 12-of-28 (42.9 percent) from the floor, 7-of-14 baskets were 3-pointers. Jaryn Simpson made three 3-pointers and Daylon Harris drilled a pair. Trey Staunch shot a perfect 3-of-3 from the field for six points and brought down seven rebounds.
  • The Vulcans quickly reclaimed the lead from Edinboro in the beginning of the second half with a 12-2 run. 30 seconds into the half, a Brent Pregram layup trimmed the lead to one point. It wasn't until the 18:53 mark when a Zyan Collins layup put Cal U back on top and gave the Vulcans their first lead since 4-3 early in the contest. Overall, the Vulcans outscored the Fighting Scots 26-4 over 11:37 between the first and second half.
  • Edinboro slowly crept back into a position to reclaim the lead behind freshman Turner Kurt. Down 44-37, the 6'8" forward scored back-to-back 3-pointers for Edinboro. Two free throws and layup from Steven Freeman and another layup by Staunch knotted the game at 49-49. It wasn't until Kurt buried a 3-pointer with 11:47 remaining that Edinboro went back on top, 52-51.
  • Both teams exchanged leads over nearly four minutes before Freeman got hot from the floor. Over the final 5:56, Edinboro outscore Cal U, 15-9, with Freeman scoring 11 points. He put Edinboro on top for good at 69-68 with a 3-pointer at the 3:12 mark.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Edinboro connected on 50.0 percent of its baskets (28-of-56), including 14-of-30 3-pointers. California(Pa.) was held to a 46.9 percent clip (30-of-64) and 7-of-31 on 3's. Both teams struggled to make their free throws, as the Fighting Scots shot 9-of-19 at the foul line, while the Vulcans were 8-of-18.
  • The Fighting Scots edged the Vulcans on the glass, 37-35, but Cal U outscored Edinboro in the paint, 38-22. The Vulcans also scored 22 points of 16 Edinboro turnovers compared to 11 points off 11 California(Pa.) mistakes.
  • Edinboro relied heavily on its bench, who outscored Cal U, 25-4. Steven Freeman paced the Fighting Scots with a season-high 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-4 3-pointers and 6-of-9 free throws in 20 minutes. Kameron King added seven points.
  • Turner Kurt fell one-point shy of tying his season-high. He finished with 17 points, shooting 6-of-14 overall and 4-of-9 from long range, to go with five rebounds.
  • Trey Staunch posted his third double-double of the season with 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting and 11 boards.
  • Jaryn Simpson was the fourth Fighting Scot in double figures He shot 4-of-7 from the field for 13 points with all four baskets coming from long range.
  • Three Vulcans scored in double figures. Collin MacAdams scored a game-high 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting, to go with nine rebounds. Brent Pegram shot 8-of-19 for 20 points and Zyan Collins contributed 18 points. Ike Okwara came off the bench to collect a team-best 11 boards.
  • Both teams combined for three ties and eight lead changes.
NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS
  • Edinboro returns to McComb Fieldhouse for its lone home contest over the next three games. The Fighting Scots will host Seton Hill on Wednesday, February 13, with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
  • Seton Hill won the first meeting of the season in Greensburg, 77-73.
