Fighting Scots Reach 20 Wins with 76-54 Win at Mercyhurst

The Short Story:  Edinboro used a pair of runs to sweep the season series with Mercyhurst while winning 20 games for the ninth straight year. A back-and-forth first half featured 11 ties and six lead changes before Edinboro spurted late for a 37-29 lead at the half. A 12-0 run to end the third quarter and start the fourth gave the Fighting Scots a comfortable margin. Edinboro shot 57.1 percent from the floor while holding the Lakers to 33.9 percent. Michaela Barnes led four players in double figures with 26 points, her seventh straight 20-point effort. Ciara Barnes added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Fighting Scots, ranked sixth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region poll, now move on the PSAC Tournament as the third seed. They host sixth-seed Gannon on Monday, March 4 at 5:30 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mercyhurst would hold a 19-17 lead after a first quarter that featured seven ties and three lead changes. Neither team led by more than two points in the period.
  • The second quarter began in a similar fashion, with four more ties and three more lead changes. The largest lead of the quarter was three points at 22-19 until late in the period when the Fighting Scots surged ahead. Michaela Barnes' layup and a 3-pointer by Abbey Antolic just before the buzzer gave Edinboro a 37-29 lead at intermission. The Scots shot 55.2 percent from the floor (16-of-29) over the first 20 minutes. Barnes had 13 points despite playing just 10 minutes due to foul trouble.
  • Edinboro began the second half with another five points on Barnes' jumper and a 3-pointer by Michelle Jahn to complete a 10-0 run as the Fighting Scots jumped out to a 42-29 lead less than two minutes into the third quarter.
  • Mercyhurst responded with a 13-6 run that pulled the Lakers to within six points at 48-42. The Edinboro lead was still just eight points at 53-45 when a Barnes' layup and free throw started the Fighting Scots on a 12-0 run. Lillian Young ended the quarter with a layup for a 58-45 lead after three quarters. Jahn opened up the fourth with a pair of free throws, followed by a 3-point play by Jontay Walton. When Barnes added a layup, Edinboro led 65-45 with just under nine minutes left in the game. Mercyhurst never pulled closer than 18 points the rest of the way.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Fighting Scots made it nine straight seasons with 20-or-more wins, entering the PSAC Tournament for the tenth consecutive year with a 20-7 record. Edinboro was ranked sixth in this week's NCAA Division II Atlantic Region poll.
  • Edinboro finished the game shooting 57.1 percent from the floor (32-of-56), the second-highest figure in a game this season. That included making 16-of-27 shots (59.3 pct.) in the second half. The Fighting Scots made 5-of-17 3-pointers and went 7-of-10 at the line. Mercyhurst was held to 33.9 percent from the floor (20-of-59), with a 6-for-20 chart on 3-pointers, plus 8-of-12 at the line.        
  • Edinboro held a slim 33-31 edge on the glass, while forcing Mercyhurst into 14 turnovers. Edinboro had 12 miscues.
  • Michaela Barnes posted her seventh straight game of 20-or-more points as she led four players in double figures. The junior guard had a game-high 26 points, making 12-of-17 field goals and going 2-of-3 at the line, while playing 28 minutes. Barnes boosted her career point total to 1,239 points, moving up to 20th in career scoring. She has scored 566 points this season, the seventh-highest season total.
  • Ciara Rosten added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds to give her 1,166 career points (28th all-time) and 751 career rebounds (8th). Jontay Walton contributed 11 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. The senior guard is now 16th in career scoring with 1,289 points. Michelle Jahn was the fourth player in double figures with 10 points, making a pair of 3-pointers, while pulling down six rebounds. Jahn has 1,360 points, moving into 12th place in career scoring.
  • Freshman Monica Brown continued to provide a spark off the bench. She was perfect from the floor, making all three of her shots, including a 3-pointer, to finish with seven points, while adding great defense.
  • Eliza Oswalt was the lone player in double figures for Mercyhurst. She finished with 16 points, making 3-of-7 3-pointers, and a team-high six rebounds.      
NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS
  • With the regular season completed, Edinboro begins play in the PSAC Tournament. The Fighting Scots come in as the third seed and host sixth-seed Gannon on Monday, March 4 at 5:30 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse. The winner moves on to play at second-seed California(Pa.) on Wednesday, Marvh 6.
  • Edinboro and Gannon split the two regular season meetings, with the road team winning in each instance. Gannon handed the Fighting Scots a 71-57 defeat on January 16 at McComb Fieldhouse, but the Fighting Scots returned the favor on February 16 with a 79-66 victory at the Hammermill Center.
