  • The Short Story: The Fighting Scots returned to the field for the first time in a week after playing just seven minutes on Wednesday against Mercyhurst, and picked up their first win of the season with a 2-1 win over visiting Indiana(Pa.). Lightning delays totaled almost three hours on Wednesday, but beautiful skies and goals by Brittnie Spithaler and Jessica Frank led Edinboro to victory. Spithaler scored in the 23rd minute, and Frank's penalty kick at 39:03 gave the Fighting Scots a 2-0 lead. IUP's Mahogany Willis scored her seventh goal of the young season with just under four minutes remaining.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro opened the scoring at 23:04 on the second goal of the season for Brittnie Spithaler. The goal started with Danielle Chatten sending a long pass down the left side to Rebecca Manns, who passed across the face of the goal to Spithaler. Spithaler's short chip found the back of the net.
  • The Fighting Scots would take a 2-0 lead late in the first half on the first goal of the season by Jessica Frank. A sophomore, Frank crossed up IUP goalkeeper Madeline Smakulski with a shot into the back left corner of the net.
  • IUP would make things interesting when Mahogany Willis found a wide open net from 30 yards out on the left wing after goalkeeper Anna Voelker came out of the net and collided with a teammate. The goal at 86:27 cut the lead at half, but IUP would not threaten after that.
GAME NOTES
  • Edinboro finished with a 22-6 advantage in shots. They held an 11-4 lead in each half.  The Fighting Scots had three corner kicks compared to two for the Crimson Hawks.
  • Anna Voelker finished with 4 saves in goal for Edinboro, but two were of the spectacular variety. The sophomore saved a shot on a breakaway by Willis with just under 22 minutes remaining, and later made a sprawling save on a shot by Samantha Joyce with 16 minutes to play. IUP goalkeeper Madeline Smakulski had 9 saves.
  • With the new two-divisional setup of the PSAC this year, teams in their own division will play each other twice. Edinboro will play at IUP on October 16.
UP NEXT
  • After playing two games of an original three-game homestand, Edinboro now plays back-to-back games on the road before heading home for the makeup game with Mercyhurst. It begins with a contest at Cal U on Wednesday, September 18.
