Balanced Effort Leads Edinboro to Split with Malone, Saint Rose

EDINBORO, Pa. – Edinboro opened the first day of competition in the Edinboro/Gannon Tournament with a pair of four-set matches. The Fighting Scots lost the first contest 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-14) to Malone, but came back with a strong showing in the nightcap with a 3-1 win (25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19) over Saint Rose. The Fighting Scots are now 5-5 on the season.  
 
THE RUNDOWN – Edinboro/Gannon Tournament vs. Malone

  • The Short Story: Edinboro would capture the first set by a 25-22 score, but Malone would gain control as the match went on, prevailing in set two, 25-18, winning the third set, 25-18, then posting a 25-14 win in the final set. Cierah Jackson led Edinboro in kills for the eighth time in nine matches with 13, while Erica Sharp contributed 11.Molly Breier finished with 17 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED   
  • Edinboro trailed early in the first set before grabbing the lead at 16-13 on a kill by Alicia Eldredge. The Pioneers came back with the next five points for an 18-16 advantage, but Edinboro would grab the lead for good at 23-22, scoring the last three points for the win. Cierah Jackson had six kills in the first set.
  • The second set featured seven ties but just one lead change. After leading 6-5, Edinboro saw Malone pull away. The score was still just 15-14, but the Pioneers would score 10 of the final 14 points as the Scots hit .129 in the set.
  • After leading 13-9, the Fighting Scots saw Malone close the gap to 17-16. The Pioneers would take the lead for good at 21-20 on block assists by Brooklyn Sullivan and Rachel Santos. That was a common theme, as the duo combined for three blocks in the final six points.
  • Malone pulled away in the fourth set after a brief rally by Edinboro. The Pioneers scored the first four points and led 6-2 before the Fighting Scots pulled to within 7-5. But back came Malone, scoring seven straight points to go up 14-5. Edinboro got no closer than saeven points the rest of the match.  
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING   
  • Junior Cierah Jackson led Edinboro in kills for the eighth time in nine matches with 13, a season high, adding 3 service aces. She now 857 career kills.
  • Setter Alicia Eldredge had a double-double with a team-high 37 assists and 10 digs. Molly Breier totaled a team-high 17 digs.
  • Freshman Erica Sharp had 11 kills, while fellow first-year player Bella Burrelli had 9 kills and 10 digs.

  • The Short Story: Edinboro improved to 5-5 with a win in four games over Saint Rose thanks to the usual strong play from Cierah Jackson and Alicia Eldredge. But Paige Morris also stepped up big with 8 kills and 3 total blocks. Jackson has now led Edinboro in kills in nine of ten matches while totaling 13, and Eldredge had 43 assists and contributed 8 kills and 9 digs.   
HOW IT HAPPENED   
  • Set number one featured six ties and five lead changes. The Fighting scots trailed for the first half of the matchby as much as 14-10, but then ran off six straight points to take the lead for good. Freshmen accounted for four of the points on two kills by Bella Burrelli and Erica Sharp. Leading 16-15, Edinboro would outscore the Golden Knights 9-2 the rest of the way.
  • Another close set followed in the second game, with eight ties and a pair of lead changes. The match was tied at 23-23 but Saint Rose accounted for the final two points on a kill by Cassidy Smith and an Edinboro hitting error.
  • Sety number three had 11 ties and eight lead changes, and the score once again ended at 25-23, but this time it was Edinboro prevailing. It was again tied at 23-23, but Burrelli gave the Scots the lead for good with a kill, and a bad set accounted for the match point. Jackson would finish with six kills in the set.
  • Edinboro would take control of the fourth set early at 6-2, only to see the Golden Knights run off nine of the next 10 points to take an 11-7 lead. Edinboro would rally and regain the lead for good at 14-13 on a service ace by Burrelli. The Scots would score four points on Burrelli's serve to go up 17-13, and Saint Rose never pulled closer than three points. The set featured four kills apiece by Eldredge and Burrelli, plus three big-time hits from Morris.   
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING   
  • Cierah Jackson and bella Burrelli continued to pace the Fighting Scots in kills with 13 and 11, respectively. Jackson has now been in double digits in all ten matches and has led the team in nine of those. Burrelli added a season-high 17 digs.
  • Setter Alicia Eldredge turned in an all-ariound solid outing with 43 assists, 8 digs (a .571 hitting percentage), 9 digs, 2 service aces, and 3 block assists.
  • The balanced offensive attack also had Erica Sharp with 9 kills and Paige Morris with 8. Shark had 4 total blocks and Morris totaled three.
  • Molly Breier led Edinboro with 18 digs, and Jessica Giannoccaro totaled 11.

  • Edinboro will conclude action in the Edinboro/Gannon Tournament on Saturday, September 21, hosting Walsh at 4 p.m.
