After Slow Start, Fighting Scots Roll Over Walsh

  • The Short Story: Edinboro made it back-to-back wins for the weekend with a four-set win over Walsh. The first three sets were all by the identical score of 25-22, with Walsh capturing the first and Edinboro coming back with wins in games two and three. The Fighting Scots got off to a fast start in the fourth set and coasted to a 25-16 win to improve to 6-5 overall. Cierah Jackson has now led Edinboro in kills in 10 of 11 matches as the junior outside hitter finished with a season-high 18. Freshman Bella Burrelli added 12 kills and 4 service aces.   
HOW IT HAPPENED   
  • The first set featured 15 ties and 5 lead changes. Tied at 20-20, Walsh took the lead for good with a run of three straight points. A service error and a service ace by Abigail Horner pulled the Fighting Scots to within 23-22, but the Cavaliers scored the last two points.  
  • Despite the close score, Edinboro never trailed in the second set, with just three ties. The last came at 22-22. Erica Sharp's kill gave Edinboro the lead for good, and a attack error and service ace by Horner knotted the match at one set apiece.
  • The third set was as close as the 25-22 score, with nine ties and four lead changes. Trailing 20-19, Edinboro would take control with five straight points. It all started with a Cierah Jackson kill following a long rally. Two more kills by Jackson were sandwiched by Walsh attack errors, and Edinboro closed out the game with another attack error. Jackson had seven kills in the set.
  • Edinboro scored the first seven points of the fourth set and Walsh was never able to get closer than six points the rest of the way. Jackson contributed six kills as Edinboro sizzled with a .579 hitting percentage.   
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING   
  • Junior Cierah Jackson led Edinboro in kills for the 10th time in 11 matches with a season-high 18, adding 3 block assists. She now has 888 career kills.
  • The freshmen tandem of Bella Burrelli and Erica Sharp continued to contribute with 12 and 8 kills, respectively. Burrelli added 4 service aces and 8 digs, while Sharp had 3 total blocks.
  • Sally Sterkel, who missed the first tournament of the year with an injury, totaled a season-high 9 kills while hitting .533.
  • Setter Alicia Eldredge had a team-high 45 assists. Molly Breier totaled a team-high 16 digs, while Jessica Giannoccaro had 10.
  • Edinboro hit .296 for the match and had 11 service aces.
UP NEXT   
  • Edinboro begins PSAC action this coming week, hosting a pair of matches. The Fighting Scots host Lock Haven on Thursday, September 26 at 6 p.m., and the next day host Bloomsburg at 4 p.m.
