Woody Scores Twice, Rushes for Over 100 Yards in Loss at East Stroudsburg

THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  East Stroudsburg 34, Edinboro 14
  • Records:  Edinboro (0-3, 0-0 PSAC West), East Stroudsburg (3-0, 0-0 PSAC East)
  • Location:  East Stroudsburg, Pa. – Eiler-Martin Stadium
  • The Short Story:  The good news for Edinboro on Saturday afternoon was they may have found a running back to replace Walter Fletcher. The bad news, four turnovers led to a third straight loss to open the 2019 campaign as East Stroudsburg scored following three of the miscues and ended the half on the other. The Warriors jumped ahead quickly with a score on the game's first possession, then scored again after Edinboro fumbled the ensuing kickoff for a 14-0 lead. They would later take advantage of three Jordan Castelli interceptions to tack on 10 points. Castelli was starting in place of injured quarterback Andrew Tomko. The bright spot was Dorian Woody. The freshman running back accounted for both of Edinboro's touchdowns on runs of 20 and 2 yards, and finished the afternoon with 104 yards on 19 carries, adding 3 receptions for 46 yards.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Fighting Scots found themselves trailing 14-0 less than ten minutes into the game. East Stroudsburg took the opening kickoff and drove 70 yards in 10 plays for a 7-0 lead. Jake Cirillo ran and passed the Warriors to the score, completing 5-of-5 passes for 50 yards and rushing for 10 yards on a pair of carries. The redshirt sophomore quarterback accounted for the first score of the game on three-yard run with 10:14 left in the first quarter.
  • The Warriors were right back in scoring territory moments later after Edinboro fumbled the ensuing kickoff. ESU took over at the Edinboro 27. It would take the Warriors eight plays to score, but Devante Robinson finally made it 14-0 with 6:07 remaining in the quarter on a one-yard run.
  • Edinboro would drive inside the ESU 20 on its next possession but the drive would stall, forcing Vicente Arriagada to come in and attempt a field goal. An illegal procedure penalty added another five yards, and the redshirt freshman's 40-yard field goal attempt was wide right.
  • The Fighting Scots defense would settle as the game moved into the second quarter. Edinboro would force a punt and take over at its own 15. Riding the running of freshman Dorian Woody, the Fighting Scots put together their best drive of the young season, going 85 yards in 10 plays, with the drive covering four minutes, 18 seconds. Jordan Castelli, playing in place of injured starter Andrew Tomko, completed four passes for 32 yards and and Woody ran five times for 48 yards. He covered the final 20 yards, bouncing a run outside to the left for his first career rushing touchdown. The score pulled the Fighting Scots to 14-7 with 6:57 remaining.
  • Unfortunately, the Warriors answered with a 13-play, 80-yard drive to take a 21-7 lead with 1:24 left in the half. Cirillo hooked up with RJ Sirajian for a 10-yard touchdown pass while throwing for 48 yards in the drive.
  • Edinboro took the ensuing kickoff and looked to put points on the board before the half ended.  Castelli found Jon Long for a 38-yard gain to the ESU 35 on the first play, and the Fighting Scots eventually drove inside the 20 in the waning seconds. A Woody run gave Edinboro a first-and-goal at the 13. Castelli clocked the ball with eight seconds left. His next pass was intercepted in the end zone by Joseph Odebode to halt the drive and deny the Fighting Scots of any potential points.
  • A turnover early in the third quarter led to a fourth ESU touchdown. Three straight running plays gave Edinboro a first down at midfield, but Castelli's long pass was picked off by Tyler Watson and returned to the ESU 37. The Warriors would make Edinboro pay for their third turnover immediately, with Cirillo finding Javier Buffalo deep for a 45-yard gain to the EU 18. Three plays later they were in the end zone on a 15-yard scoring run by Robinson. That gave ESU a 28-7 lead with 10:49 remaining in the third quarter.
  • With Woody providing the impetus, Edinboro answered with its second long scoring drive of the game. The freshman carried six times on the 12-play, 75-yard drive, but the big play was a pass reception by the 5'8", 175 lb. running back. He took a screen pass from Castelli and went 28 yards to the ESU three. On second-and-goal, he capped the drive with his second rushing touchdown of the day, covering two yards. Arriagada's PAT made it 28-14 with 5:34 left.
  • East Stroudsburg tacked on a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter by Jordan Walters. The first came in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to make it 31-14. The Warriors used a time-consuming drive that ate up over six minutes and covered 61 yards on 11 plays. The Boro defense would stop ESU at the EU 22, with Walters converting on a 32-yard field goal with 14:07 remaining in the game.
  • The second three-pointer of the period came courtesy of Edinboro's fourth turnover of the game. Andrew Brown returned Castelli's third pickoff of the day 53 yards to the EU 39. The Warriors drove inside the EU 10 before the Fighting Scot defense came up with the stop. Walters came in and booted a 24-yard field goal for a 34-14 lead with 3:03 remaining.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Edinboro would finish with a season-high 309 yards, but the Fighting Scots had 214 of that in the first half. They ran for a season-high 123 yards while passing for 186. The defensive limited East Stroudsburg to just 351 total yards, but struggled to slow down Jake Cirillo, who completed 22-of-27 passes for 223 yards while adding another 36 yards rushing. The Warriors finished with 128 yards on the ground.
  • After committing just one turnover in the first two games, the Fighting Scots were guilty of four costly turnovers vs. ESU. East Stroudsburg did not commit a turnover.
  • The other statistic that was lopsided for the Warriors was time of possession. ESU held the ball for 35:15 while converting 8-of-14 third down plays. Edinboro had the ball for 24:45 but would convert 7-of-13 third down plays.
  • Edinboro came in rushing for just 86 yards in the first two games, but Dorian Woody topped that himself. The redshirt freshman ran for 104 yards on 19 carries with 2 TDs, covering 20 and 2 yards, and added 3 receptions for 46 yards. The two touchdowns were the first rushing of his career.
  • Jordan Castelli got the start at quarterback in place of injured starter Andrew Tomko. The redshirt sophomore transferred from Cal U last winter and was seen his first career action. He completed 16-of-30 passes for 186 yards with 3 TDs. He was particularly effective in the first half, throwing for 143 yards while completing 11-of-18 passes.
  • Ta'Nauz Gregory led Edinboro's receivers with 7 catches for 78 yards. Jon Long added 4 receptions fpor 54 yards.
  • The Boro defense featured a 14-tackle effort from senior strong safety, including nine solo stops. Ryan Bischof added 9 tackles. Tarique Smith accounted for the lone sack of the game.
  • Devante Robinson led the East Stroudsburg ground attack with 65 yards on 18 carries, scoring twice. Cirillo completed passes to eight receivers, with Javier Buffalo leading the way with 7 catches for 118 yards. Robinson caught 4 passes for 38 yards.
  • East Stroudsburg head coach Mike Terwilliger was making his first appearance at home as head coach. The former record-setting quarterback at ESU gave the Fighting Scots plenty og anguish as a player.
THE RECORD BOOK
  • Ta'Nauz Gregory continues his pursuit of several receiving records. With 7 catches for 78 yards, he now has 185 career receptions, which ranks third, and is also third in career receiving yards with 2,575. He is also second in receiving TDs (28).
