Spithaler, Chatten Score Goals in 2-1 Weather-Delayed Win over Mercyhurst

EDINBORO, Pa. – For Edinboro head coach Gary Kagiavas and his Fighting Scots, it was well worth the wait. Edinboro and Mercyhurst originally took the field on September 11, but that match was delayed close to three hours due to lightning then postponed after playing just over seven minutes. On Monday night, the two local rivals hooked up again at Sox Harrison Stadium, and under beautiful skies, Edinboro prevailed 2-1.

The victory boosted Edinboro to 4-2-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the PSAC West. The Fighting Scots have now won four straight contests, their longest winning streak since 2016 when Edinboro opened the season with five straight wins. Mercyhurst lost its second straight match to fall to 2-2-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the PSAC West. Edinboro boosted its lead in the all-time series to 11-7-4 and is 8-1-2 in the last 11 meetings.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie after one half of play, with Edinboro holding an 8-6 advantage in shots.
The Fighting Scots would grab a 1-0 lead just over four minutes into the second half as sophomore Brittnie Spithaler scored her third goal of the season, sliding the ball into the left side past Mercyhurst goalkeeper Vilde Wold at 49:09.

Danielle Chatten made it 2-0 with her at 71:14 with her first goal of the season. The senior gathered in the ball on a breakaway, feinted several times before knocking the ball into the right corner from 15 yards out. Chatten now has 18 career goals, which is tied for 13th all-time at Edinboro, and 50 career points, which is 13th.

Edinboro would control the action for the most part after that, but Mercyhurst took advantage of a great crossing pass by Maia Russo to cut the deficit in half at the 86:23 mark. Russo's pass went in front of the net to Laia Santos, who scored her third goal of the season with a short into the left corner of the net.

Mercyhurst would not threaten again as Edinboro controlled the ball to make a winner of Anna Voelker in goal. The sophomore totaled 6 saves. Wold had 8 saves for Mercyhurst. Edinboro had a 17-14 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Fighting Scots returns to action on Saturday, September 28 as rivalry week continues with a match against Gannon at Sox Harrison Stadium. That contest gets underway at 5 p.m.
