Fighting Scots Battle Gannon to 2-2 Tie in Double Overtime

EDINBORO, Pa. – What started out as a shootout ended as a defensive struggle, as Edinboro and Gannon battled to a 2-2 tie in two overtimes at Sox Harrison Stadium on Saturday night. The Fighting Scots were seeking a fifth straight win and are now 4-2-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the PSAC West. Gannon is 3-3-1 and 2-3-1, respectively.

Edinboro is currently second in the division after being picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll.  The Lady Knights were picked second. The Fighting Scots were looking for a sweep of this week's matches against local rivals Mercyhurst and Gannon after defeating the Lakers 2-1 on Monday.

A wild first half saw both teams score twice in the first half. In fact, Gannon scored 29 seconds into the match to take a lightning-quick 1-0 lead. Aesling McCullough accounted for the early advantage for the Lady Knights.

Edinboro didn't wait long to answer. The Fighting Scots knotted the score at 5:24 on Brittany Hurey's first goal of the season, assisted by Brittnie Spithaler. Hurey was able to deposit the ball into the corner of the net.  It was the junior forward's second career goal, and first since 2017.

The first half ended as it started, with a pair of goals. The Fighting Scots took a 2-1 lead as Spithaler again assisted on the goal, this time by Leah Czechowski. It marked the first career goal at Edinboro for Czechowski, a junior forward who transferred from Genesee Community College. Her goal came at 39:14.

Almost exactly five minutes later, at 44:17, Gannon sent the match into the half tied at 2-2 thanks to an unassisted goal by Hannah Hays. Hays' shot from 15 yards out nicked the post and went in.

The defenses settled in from there.  Not one goal was scored in the second half, as the two teams went to overtime tied at 2-2. After being tied in shots at the half, 7-7, Edinboro held a slight 11-9 advantage at the end of regulation.

The score was still tied at 2-2 after ten minutes of overtime, with the shots now also tied at 12-12. The second ten-minute overtime session saw just one shot, that by Edinboro's Rebecca Manns in the 103rd minute.

The final 65 minutes saw the goalkeepers dominate. Anna Voelker finished with six saves for Edinboro, while Kennedy Solymosi had seven saves for Gannon.

Edinboro returns to action on Wednesday, October 2 hosting PSAC West leader and preseason favorite Slippery Rock. The Rock comes in with a 7-1-0 record and is a perfect 6-0-0 in the PSAC West. SRU has won six straight matches after defeating Cal U 4-0 on Saturday.
