Fighting Scots Head Home for Three in a Row After Opening Loss at No. 5 Bloomsburg

  • The Short Story: After battling to a scoreless tie through 45 minutes, Bloomsburg scored twice within a two-minute span early in the second half and would add a third goal in the 66th minute. Nicole Varano accounted for the first two goals, and Maggie McDonald added an insurance goal. Bloomsburg, the defending PSAC champion and ranked fifth in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll, held a 17-6 advantage in shots. With the PSAC split into divisions this year, the match was a non-conference contest. Edinboro now plays three matches in a row at home.
HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The two teams battled to a scoreless tie at the half, with Bloomsburg holding a 6-2 advantage in shots. Anna Voelker had 6 saves. 
  • The fifth-ranked Huskies registered a pair of goals early in the second half, both by Nicole Varano less than two minutes apart.  Varano opened the scoring on a header off a throw in from Lauren Hoelke at the 53:51 mark. She added her second goal at 55:42, taking a pass up the right wing from Megan Callan and beating Voelker with a shot low inside the far post.
  • Maggie McDonald made the score 3-0 with a goal from 30 yards out into the top left corner of the net at 66:00.
GAME NOTES   
  • Bloomsburg came into the match ranked fifth in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Preseason Poll. The Huskies are the defending PSAC champions and reached the Elite 8 of the Division II Tournament last year
  • The Huskies held a 17-6 advantage in shots, including 10-4 in shots on goal.
  • Sophomore Anna Voelker registered 7 saves in goal for the Fighting Scots. Jenna Hawkins had 4 saves in goal for Bloomsburg.
  • Edinboro head coach Gary Kagiavas is in his 24th season as head coach. The only coach of Edinboro's program since its inception, he entered the 2019 campaign ranked 24th among active Division II coaches with 219 wins. He now has a 219-179-37 record.  

UP NEXT   
  • Edinboro plays its first home match on Saturday, September 7, hosting Notre Dame(Oh.). The match gets underway at Sox Harrison Stadium at 1 p.m. The Falcons were 10-6-1 a year ago opened the 2019 campaign at Gannon on Thursday.
  • The Fighting Scots claimed a 1-0 decision over Notre Dame(Oh.) to open the 2018 season.  Edinboro holds a 5-0-0 advantage in the all-time series.
