Fighting Scots Finish with Split of First Two Matches in Rebich Investments Invitational

THE RUNDOWN – Rebich Investments Invitational

  • The Short Story: The Fighting Scots played the second of their two matches in the Rebich Investments Invitational on Friday and suffered a four-set loss to Minnesota State Moorhead. That evened their record at 1-1 after a three-set win over Salem.  Edinboro took the first set, 25-18, but the Dragons rallied to win the second set, 25-20, then won the next two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-20. Cierah Jackson and freshman Belle Burrelli paced the Scots with 13 kills apiece. Alicia Eldredge finished with 34 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Edinboro would claim a 1-0 lead with a 25-18 win in the first set as Bella Burrelli had five kills. Leading 19-17, the Fighting Scots outscored the Dragons 6-1 the rest of the way, with an Alicia Eldredge kill clinching the set.
  • The Fighting Scots looked poised to take a 2-0 lead, holding a 13-9 advantage. Minn. St. Moorhead rallied and the teams were tied at 16, 17, 18 and 19. The Dragons grabbed the lead for good at 20-19, the start of a run of five straight points. MSU Moorhead prevailed 25-20.
  • Edinboro fell behind early in the third set at 7-1, but would grab an 18-17 lead. The two teams were tied at 22-22, but MSU Moorhead tallied the final three points for a 25-22 win. The third set fdeatured eight tied and six lead changes.
  • Edinboro could not get over the hump in the decisive fourth set. It was tied on four occasions, the last at 16-16, but the Dragons scored the next four points for a 20-16 lead. Kills by freshmen Bethany Miller and Erica Sharp pulled the Fighting Scots to within 20-18, but the Dragons would answer with the next three for a 23-18. They would go on to claim a 25-20 win to clinch the match.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING   
  • Junior Cierah Jackson and freshman Bella Burrelli led Edinboro with 13 kills apiece.
  • Freshman Erica Sharp, a 6'2" middle hitter, had an imposing game with 9 kills plus a block solo and 5 block assists.
  • Setter Alicia Eldredge had a team-high 34 assists along with 6 digs and a pair of block solos. Molly Breier led Edinboro in digs with 10. Freshman Bethany Miller finished with 3 service aces.
  • Edinboro hit .118 for the match, with a .444 figure in the first set. The Fighting Scots also had 9 service aces.
UP NEXT   
  • Edinboro plays two more matches in day two of the Rebich Investments Invitational, both against Mountain East Conference foes. The Fighting Scots play at 12 noon against Glenville State, then return to the court for a 6 p.m. match against West Virginia Wesleyan.
