THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  No. 12 Grand Valley State 35,  Edinboro 10
  • Records:  Edinboro (0-1, 0-0 PSAC West), Grand Valley State (1-0, 0-0 GLIAC)
  • Location:  Allendale, Mich.. -- Lubbers Stadium
  • The Short Story:  The Fighting Scots opened the 2019 season at one of Division II's powerhouses, and came away with a 35-10 loss in front of 14,552 fans. Edinboro was outgained 572 yards to 120, but the defense still gave a decent account for itself. The unit was done in by big plays but came up with three takeaways and accounted for Edinboro's only touchdown on a 46-yard interception return by DeAndre' Dowdell. That closed the gap to 21-10 early in the third quarter, but GVSU would score a touchdown in each of the final two quarters to pull away. Edinboro added a 38-yard field goal by redshirt freshman Vicente Arrigada. Aryuan Cain-Veasey paced the Lakers with 200 yards rushing and 3 TDs on 11 carries, scoring on runs of 48, 94, and 29 yards.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Grand Valley State jumped on the Fighting Scots early. After a three-and-out for Edinboro, the Lakers drove 63 yards on six plays to take a 7-0 at the 13:35 mark. The touchdown came on a one-yard pass from Cole Kotopka to Austin Paritee. The score was set up by a 59-yard reception by Bryce Young-Walls to the EU 1.
  • The Lakers forced another three-and-out by Edinboro, but their next drive was halted by an interception by Billy DePaul. The junior free safety returned the pickoff 38 yards to the GVSU 34.
  • Unfortunately, four plays netted the loss of a yard for Edinboro. Grand Valley State took over at its own 35 and five plays later scored the second touchdown of the night. Once again, it was a big play that did in the Fighting Scots, as Aryuan Cain-Veasey sprinted 48 yards for six points and a 14-0 lead with 3:44 left in the first quarter.
  • The Edinboro defense would settle in and hold down the high-powered GVSU offense into the second quarter. Early in the period the Lakers completed a pass to the EU 15, but Ryan Bischof forced a fumble that Joshua Boyd recovered at the EU 22.
  • Edinboro's second takeaway didn't produce any points, but the Fighting Scots would score their first points of 2019 on their next possession. They went 57 yards on 10 plays, keyed by an Andrew Tomko-to-Ta'Nauz Gregory hookup of 36 yards on 3rd-and-8. That left the Fighting Scots with the ball at the GVSU 21. The drive would stall, but redshirt freshman Vicente Arriagada came in and converted a 38-yard field goal to close the gap to 14-3 with 7:28 remaining. It marked the first placekicking attempt of his career.
  • Grand Valley State would answer Edinboro's 3-pointer with a long touchdown run later in the second quarter. After Corey Badaracco pinned the Lakers back at their own six with a 60-yard punt, Cain-Veasey went 94 yards to make it 21-3 with 4:29 remaining.
  • The Lakers would have one more opportunity to score late in the period, marching to the EU 25 before the Boro defense stiffened and forced a pair of incompletions to end the half. GVSU led 21-3 and outgained Edinboro 338 yards to 79. The Lakers ran for 187 yards. Edinboro had just three first downs in the first half.
  • The defense would come up with a big play early in the third quarter to get Edinboro back into the game. DeAndre' Dowdell jumped a route at the EU 46 and returned the pickoff for a pick six. The 48-yard touchdown return plus Arriagada extra point made it 21-10 with 12:12 left.
  • GVSU responded with a 5-play, 64-yard drive to build the lead back to 18 points at 28-10 with 9:16 remaining. Another big running play, once again by Cain-Veasey, accounted for the score. The redshirt sophomore running back went 29 yards for his third touchdown of the night.
  • Grand Valley State would tack on an insurance touchdown to start the fourth quarter as Kotopka capped a seven-play, 70-yard drive with an eight-yard pass to Jayk Slager. That would be the final score, coming with 13:27 remaining in the game.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • The final numbers were lopsided in Grand Valley State's favor, although the Boro defense played better than the numbers indicate. The Lakers finished with 572 yards compared to 120 for Edinboro. The Fighting scots were forced to abandon the running game early with their two freshmen tailbacks and finished with 13 yards rushing on 20 attempts. GVSU featured a balanced attack with 319 yards rushing on 40 carries, along with 253 yards through the air.
  • After ranking among Division II's leaders in turnovers forced a year ago, Edinboro came up with a pair of interceptions and a fumble recovery. The Fighting Scots did not commit a turnover.
  • Andrew Tomko accounted for most of Edinboro's offense, completing 13-of-32 passes for 107 yards, along with six yards rushing. That was courtesy of a 21-yard run for a first down on a fake punt. Kyle Simms carried twice late in the game for seven yards to finish as the top rusher.
  • Ta'Nauz Gregory caught 4 passes for 54 yards, while Jon Long also caught 4 passes for 44 yards. Long caught just 3 passes last year as a freshman.
  • Freshman running backs Dorian Woody and CJ Reyes-Diggs had a slow start to their promising careers. Woody carried 10 time for minus 1 yard, adding 2 receptions for 3 yards, while Reyes-Diggs carried once for a yard and caught 2 passes for minus 1 yard.
  • The Edinboro punting game excelled, averaging 39.1 yards on 10 punts. Tomko punted 3 times for 46.7 yards, with a long of 50 yards, while Badaracco punted five times for a 44.2 yard average. That included a career-long 60-yard boot.
  • Cornerback Joshua Boyd and linebacker Ryan Bischof led Edinboro with 11 tackles apiece. Brandon Anderson, who has led the team in tackles the last two years, added 7 stops. Billy DePaul and DeAndre' Dowdell registered interceptions, and Boyd recovered a fumble.
  • Aryuan Cain-Veasey had a huge night for Grand Valley State. The 5'10", 225 lb. redshirt sophomore ran for 200 yards and 3 TDs on just 11 carries. A year ago he totaled 210 yards and one touchdown. He led a ground game that finished with 319 yards. QB Cole Kotopka added 38 yards rushing and threw for 253 yards, completing 18-of-29 passes.
