Fast Start Not Enough for Weary Scots in Loss at Cal

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – A weary Edinboro men's basketball team playing for the fourth time in nine days against yet another challenging opponent, suffered a 108-71 defeat at Cal U on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Scots suffered their fourth straight loss and are now 5-8 overall and 2-7 in the PSAC West. A streaking Cal squad has now won three straight games to improve to 10-5 and 6-3, respectively.

Over the last four games, Edinboro has played Gannon, West Chester, Pitt-Johnstown and Cal. The last three teams brought a combined record of 33-7 into the games.

The contest got off to a very promising start, as the Fighting Scots scored the first 13 points of the game in what started out as a 3-point shooting contest. Following a Jaryn Simpson layup, Daylon Harris hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Alex Jay drained a three. Trey Staunch's layup made it 13-0 two minutes into the game.

Trailing 16-3, Cal awoke offensively. The Vulcans ran off 12 straight points, but that was just a precursor of what was to come. Cal's first six baskets were 3-pointers, while six of Edinboro's first eight buckets came from beyond the arc.

Cal would finally catch up at 26-26 on Zyan Collins' tip-in midway through the first half. Collins' hoop triggered an 18-0 run, as Cal went up 42-26 with 5:25 remaining. All told, Cal went on a 27-4 run, and going back to 16-3, the Vulcans outscored Edinboro, 39-10.

Edinboro would stage its own comeback late in the half, using a 13-5 run to pull to within 47-39 on a pair of Staunch free throws. Unfortunately, Collins hit a three just before the buzzer to make it 50-39 at the half. It was the Vulcans' ninth 3-pointer of the half.

The Fighting Scots pulled to within eight points at 54-46 on a Staunch bucket, but they were eventually outscored 58-32 over the final 20 minutes.

Edinboro shot 39.0 percent from the floor (23-of-59), making 11-of-32 3-pointers, and went 14-of-20 at the line. Cal was at 48.1 percent (38-of-79), while making 18-of-38 3-pointers, the most allowed by Edinboro this year. The Vulcans were 14-of-20 at the line.

Cal held a 48-36 rebounding advantage, including 22 offensive boards. Edinboro committed 17 turnovers and Cal eight. The Vulcans finished with a 30-10 advantage in points off turnovers, along with 27-1 in second chance points.

Harris led four Fighting Scots in double figures with 18 points. The senior forward made 6-of-10 shots, including 4-of-8 3-pointers.  Staunch had 14 points, a team-high seven rebounds, and four assists. Anthony Coleman and Simpson contributed 12 points apiece, with Coleman finishing with six assists.

The Vulcans had five players in double figures while scoring a season-best 108 points. Brent Pegram scored 30 points, making 7-of-10 3-pointers. Collins finished with 17 points, with Babatunde Ajike adding 15 points. Jermaine Hall Jr. had 13 points and Tim Smith Jr. 12.

The Fighting Scots will yet another outstanding opponent on Wednesday, January 15 when ninth-ranked Indiana(Pa.) visits McComb Fieldhouse. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
