Depleted Fighting Scots Fall to Seventh-Ranked IUP

EDINBORO, Pa. – A depleted Edinboro men's basketball team suffered its fifth straight loss on Wednesday night, 88-53 to seventh-ranked Indiana(Pa.), at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots are now 5-9 overall and 2-8 in the PSAC West, while IUP improved to 14-1 overall with its sixth straight win, and is 9-1 in league play.

The Fighting Scots were forced to play without leading scorer Anthony Coleman, who was out with an injury, and also lost double-figure scorer Daylon Harris for a period of time with an injury. Coleman is averaging 18.8 ppg. and ranks seventh in the PSAC in scoring.

Harris would return, and the Fighting Scots would actually close a 14-point deficit to just eight at 30-22 with 2:42 left in the first half. IUP would spurt before the end of half, going on an 11-2 run before settling for a 41-26 lead at the half.

The Crimson Hawks opened the second half outscoring Edinboro, 11-3, to build their lead to 52-29 with 16:08 left. The Fighting Scots would never pull closer than 17 points the rest of the waay at 55-38 with just over 13 minutes to play. The final score was the largest margin of the night.

Edinboro would shoot a season-low 27.3 percent from the floor (18-of-66), going 3-of-24 on 3-pointers, and was 14-of-21 at the line. IUP ended the night at 48.5 percent (32-of-66), making 11-of-32 3-pointers, and was 13-of-20 at the line. The Crimson Hawks held a 52-36 advantage on the glass, and committed nine turnovers compared to 14 for Edinboro.

Trey Staunch and Jaryn Simpson led Edinboro with 13 points apiece. Simpson handed out four assists, as did Steven Freeman, who was making his first start of the season in place of Coleman. Anthony Allen came off the bench to finish with a career-high 10 points, adding five rebounds and a pair of blocks. Freeman and Alex Jay finished with a team-high seven rebounds.

The Crimson Hawks featured four players in double figures. Malik Miller led the way with 22 points, making 4-of-12 3-pointers. Ethan Porterfield had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, with former Meadville High School standout Armoni Foster contributing 13 points. Shawndale Jones came off the bench to score 11 points. Chucky Humphries had 11 rebounds.

Edinboro is scheduled to play the second of three straight home games on Saturday, January 18, hosting Clarion. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
