Simpson Notches Career-High 38 Points in 93-81 Loss to Clarion

EDINBORO, Pa.Jaryn Simpson dropped in a career-high 38 points, but the Edinboro men's basketball team suffered its sixth straight on Friday night, dropping a 93-81 decision to Clarion. Edinboro is now 5-10 overall and 2-9 in the PSAC West. Clarion snapped a seven-game losing streak and is now 3-14 and 2-9, respectively.

The contest was moved up a day due to the arrival of a winter storm, meaning both teams were playing for the second straight game. The quick turnaround didn't seem to bother the Golden Eagles, as they jumped out to an early lead and forced the Fighting Scots to play catch-up most of the night.

Clarion would take a 47-39 lead into the half behind a strong shooting effort. The Golden Eagles shot 51.5 percent from the floor (17-of-33), including 5-of-10 3-pointers, and was 8-of-10 at the line. Edinboro came in at 41.7 percent from the floor (15-of-36). Simpson was able to keep the Fighting Scots within striking distance as the junior guard dropped in 22 points in the first 20 minutes, making 8-of-10 field goals.

A Simpson layup and three-point play by Alex Jay pulled Edinboro to within three at 47-44 early in the second half. Clarion responded with nine straight points as the deficit grew to 12 points at 56-44.

A Trey Staunch layup and Simpson's three-point play cut the gap to seven at 56-49, but the Fighting Scots would pull no closer than that the rest of the way. Clarion answered with a run of its own, this time 11-3, and Edinboro trailed 67-52 midway through the half.

With leading scorer Anthony Coleman missing his second straight game with an injury, Simpson turned in a career-best performance. He made 13-of-25 field goals, including 5-of-10 3-pointers and was 7-of-7 at the line to finish with 38 points, his third career 30-point game. He added four assists.

Staunch registered his second double-double of the season with an 18-point, 14-rebound effort. Turner Kurt came off the bench to contribute 11 points, making 3-of-5 3-pointers. Jay was also in double figures with 10 points, adding six rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a pair of steals.

The Fighting Scots also received an unexpected boost from Jack Gallagher. The freshman guard had seen limited action, playing in five games for 17 minutes, before the Clarion game. He would play 18 minutes. While he didn't score, he had four rebounds, three assists and three steals, not to mention plenty of energy.

Clarion featured five players in double figures, led by Kaison Branch and Stevan Rodriguez with 20 points apiece. Rodriguez did most of his damage at the line, where he was 12-of-13. Aaron Hilzendeger added 16 points, with Elijah Cottrill finishing with 12 and Mason Mraz 10.

Edinboro would end the night shooting 36.8 percent from the floor (28-of-76), including 9-of-26 on 3-pointers, and making 16-of-21 free throws. Clarion, meanwhile, was at 51.7 percent (31-of-60), and was just as hot from beyond the arc at 10-of-20. The Golden Eagles made 21-of-26 free throws. Edinboro held a 44-39 lead on the glass behind Staunch.

The Fighting Scots will return to action on Wednesday, January 22, wrapping up a three-game homestand against Seton Hill.
