Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Bob Shreve, Sports Information Director

Simpson, Staunch and Harris Combine for 56 Points in 86-75 Loss to Seton Hill

EDINBORO, Pa. – A depleted Edinboro men's basketball team made repeated runs at Seton Hill after falling behind early, but the Fighting Scots were never able to catch up while suffering an 86-75 loss at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro fell to 5-11 overall and 2-10 in the PSAC West with the loss, while Seton Hill improved to 3-12 and 2-10, respectively.

Edinboro played its third straight game with leading scorer Anthony Coleman, and Anthony Allen, who has seen increased minutes off the bench of late, was out due to illness. Several other players hobbled off during the game, but would return.

The Fighting Scots were unable to slow down Seton Hill's leading scorer, Nathan Davis. The senior guard finished with 34 points, the most by an opponent this year. He matched his season average of 18.5 ppg. while leading the Griffins to a 31-14 lead with just over ten minutes to play, scoring 18 points.

Trailing by as many as 18 points in the first half, the Fighting Scots came alive late in the half to pull with six points at intermission at 43-37. They did so with a 14-2 run over the final five-plus minutes. Trey Staunch paced the burst with nine points. Jack Gallagher's driving layup with eight seconds left cut the deficit to the smallest margin since seven minutes into the game.

Seton Hill opened the second half with a 7-2 run to go ahead 50-39, but the Scots continued to cut into the margin, only to see the Griffins answer. Daylon Harris' layup pulled Edinboro to 51-45 with 15:48 to play, but the Griffins built the lead up to double digits.

Back came the Boro, with four straight points by Turner Kurt making it 64-56 with ten minutes left. Anthony Karabatsos answered with back-to-back three's, followed by an old-fashioned 3-point play in the span of just over two minutes. Karabatsos had gone scoreless in the first half. His personal 9-0 run gave the Griffins a 73-58 lead and Edinboro would get no closer than ten points the rest of the way.

Jaryn Simpson and Staunch continued their strong play with 20 points apiece. Both enjoyed strong nights at the charity stripe, with Simpson making 10-of-12 and Simpson 8-of-9. Staunch was 6-of-8 from the floor and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. The 6'4", 285 lb. former offensive tackle has now scored in double figures in eight straight games, with three 20-point efforts. Simpson, meanwhile, had his third game of 20-or-more points in the last six contests. He added five assists.

Harris was also in double figures with 18 points, making 8-of-12 field goals. The senior forward added six rebounds.

Sophomore forward Kameron King made his first career start and finished with six points. For the second straight game, Jack Gallagher proved a factor as the freshman guard had five points and seven boards. Kurt was the other Fighting Scot to score, totaling six points.

Davis made 11-of-20 field goals, including 5-of-9 3-pointers, and was 7-of-7 at the line to finish with 34 points for Seton Hill. Chimaobu Ezekwesili added 19 points and 11 rebounds, with Karabatsos totaling 11 points and seven boards.

Edinboro shot 43.6 percent for the game (24-of-55), making just 2-of-19 3-pointers, and went 25-of-32 at the line. Seton Hill shot 47.0 percent (31-of-66), went 9-of-20 from beyond the arc, and was 15-of-20 at the line. The Griffins held a 40-34 rebounding edge. Edinboro committed 16 turnovers and Seton Hill 14.

Edinboro will look to snap a seven-game losing streak on Saturday, January 25 as the Fighting Scots play at Slippery Rock. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
