Barnes Burns Vulcans for 35 Points as Edinboro Upsets No. 15 Cal, 73-72

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team rode a brilliant effort by Michaela Barnes to rally for a 73-72 win at 15th-ranked Cal U on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Scots have now won three straight games to improve to 7-6 overall and 5-4 in the PSAC West. The Vulcans saw their three-game winning streak snapped as they dropped to 12-3 and 6-3, respectively.

Edinboro has now won five straight games against the Vulcans. Second-year head coach Callie Wheeler is 3-0 vs. Cal, with the Vulcans nationally-ranked in all three games.

Barnes scored a season-high 35 points on a variety of drives and pull-up jumpers. It marked her seventh career 30-point game, and fourth this season. She came into the contest ranked third in the PSAC in scoring. The big effort moved her up two spots on the career scoring charts as she is now fifth with 1,582 points.

Edinboro would hold a slim 6-5 lead two minutes into the game, but would not lead again until early in the fourth period. Cal followed with the next 13 points to jump out to a 25-16 lead after one quarter. The Fighting Scots would close the gap to 40-35 at the half behind a big rebounding effort. Edinboro held a 24-9 advantage on the glass, offsetting 11 turnovers.

The Fighting Scots pulled to within a point on a pair of occasions in the third quarter, but Cal spurted each time. The first came at 40-39 on a Barnes' basket early in the quarter. The Vulcans answered with six straight points for a 46-39 advantage.

Back cam the Scots, answering with their own run of six straight points, all by Bridgette Shaffer, to pull to within 46-45. Cal responded with a 7-0 run and would take a 57-49 lead into the fourth quarter as Bianca Jasper hit a layup at the buzzer.

Edinboro would outscore Cal, 24-15, over the final ten minutes. The Fighting Scots opened the period with a 10-2 run. Madison Amalia began the period with a 3-pointer, and Barnes took over from there. She would score Edinboro's next 12 points, giving the Scots the lead for the first time since 6-5 on a short jumper for a 61-60 lead with 5:54 left in the game.

Four lead changes would ensue, with Edinboro taking the lead for good at 67-65 with 4:13 remaining on a Shaffer 3-pointer. It was her first of the game, and she has now made at least one in every game. The redshirt senior added a pair of free throws to give Edinboro a 69-65 lead with 3:30 left.

Cal answered with a basket to cut the lead in half, but Monica Brown sank a pair of free throws and Barnes drained a 16-foot jumper for a 73-67 advantage with 1:58 to play.

The homestanding Vulcans made things interesting after that. Shauna Harrison hit a 3-pointer to make it 73-70 with 1:32 left, and after a turnover, Jasper's drive cut Edinboro's lead to a point at 73-72 with a minute left.

Edinboro would miss a 3-pointer and Cal would have one last possession. They put the ball in Jasper's hands, but she was unable to get a good look. Her off-balance shot from the foul line was off the mark. Brionna Allen grabbed the rebound under the basket with a second left, but her hurried layup was no good.

Barnes made 14-of-19 shots, including her lone 3-point attempt, and was 6-of-7 at the line for her 35 points. She added eight rebounds.
Barnes was ably supported by several other Fighting Scots. Bridgette Shaffer finished with 15 points and had eight rebounds. Cheniya Sharpe recorded her second straight double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
