Fighting Scots Ride Shaffer's Long-Range Shooting, Hounding Defense to Near Upset of 8th-ranked IUP

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team came as close as you could come to upsetting eighth-ranked Indiana(Pa.) on Wednesday night at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots used a harassing defense to rally from a 15-point deficit to the Crimson Hawks, but would ultimately suffer a 66-63 loss.

The Fighting Scots saw their three-game winning streak snapped while falling to 7-7 overall and 5-5 in the PSAC West. IUP, meanwhile, has now won 13 games in a row and sits at 15-1 and 10-0, respectively. Edinboro was looking for its second straight upset of a nationally-ranked team after the Fighting scots handed 15th-ranked Cal a 73-72 defeat on Saturday.

After holding a 27-19 lead at the half, IUP would build its lead to 39-24 with 6:12 remaining in the third quarter. That's when the Fighting Scots turned to a pressing defense that forced the Crimson Hawks into numerous turnovers. It's also when Bridgette Shaffer caught fire.

In fact, the redshirt senior started the Fighting Scots on a 13-5 run as Edinboro would pull to within 46-37 after three quarters. She had been held scoreless the first 20 minutes, missing all three of her shot attempts while sitting half of the half with foul trouble.

Shaffer would step up and hit her first basket of the night, a 3-pointer, with 4:47 to play following an IUP turnover. It would be one of seven turnovers by the Crimson Hawks once the run started. Cheniya Sharpe would hit a pair of free throws and a layup, and Shaffer made a pair at the line, and Michaela Barnes had a layup and a pair of free throws to close out the quarter.

Rajah Fink hit a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter to boost IUP's lead back to 49-37, but the Fighting Scots responded with the next 15 points to take a 52-49 lead. Shaffer proved the catalyst, as she made three 3-pointers. Her third 3-pointer of the period gave the Fighting Scots their first lead since the first quarter at 50-49 with 5:58 remaining.  Barnes added a layup after yet another IUP turnover and Edinboro had a 52-49 advantage.

The Crimson Hawks would rally back to reclaim the lead at 53-52 on a Lexi Griggs' layup, but Shaffer's arcing three found nothing but the bottom of the net for a 55-53 lead with 4:15 remaining. After Courtney Alexander made on-of-two free throws, Shaffer made her fifth 3-pointer of the night to give Edinboro it's biggest lead of the night at 58-54 with 3:38 on the clock.

The game would go back and forth from there. IUP reclaimed the lead at 59-58 with five straight points, but Shaffer's layup made it 60-59 at the 1:20 mark. Alexander followed with a three, but Shaffer hit her seventh of the night and sixth of the period for a 63-62 lead with 49 seconds showing. Natalie Myers' two free throws gave the lead back to IUP at 64-63 with 24 seconds left, as it turned out for good.

Barnes would just miss on a layup, and Justina Mascaro was fouled after grabbing the rebound. She made both for a 66-63 IUP advantage with 16 seconds left. The Fighting Scots had two last gasps. Shaffer's contested three barely missed, but IUP turned the ball over. Barnes' three would be blocked at the buzzer.

Edinboro ended the night shooting 31.5 percent (23-of-73) while IUP finished at 50.0 percent (24-of-48). Both teams made eight 3-pointers, Edinboro on 29 attempts and IUP on 22. Edinboro was 9-of-14 at the line while IUP was 10-of-12.

The Fighting Scots battled a much taller IUP squad on the glass, with the Crimson Hawks claiming a 42-34 advantage. They more than made up for that while forcing IUP into 25 turnovers, sparked by the hounding defense of Monica Brown. The sophomore finished with a career-high tying four steals. Edinboro would commit just eight turnovers and hold a 27-6 advantage in points off turnovers.

Shaffer paced the Fighting Scots with a career-high 25 points, all in the second half. She made a career-best seven 3-pointers on 12 attempts. Barnes was also in double-figures with 17 points, adding five rebounds and four assists. Edinboro's fifth all-time leading scorer now has 1,599 career points. Sharpe contributed eight points and nine rebounds.

IUP would finish with four players in double figures. Mascara led the way with 20 points, adding four assists and four blocks. Myers had 14 points and eight rebounds, while Alexander totaled 12 points. Griggs finished with 10 points, while Maura D'Anna had a game-high 10 rebounds.

Edinboro is scheduled to play the second of three straight home games on Saturday, January 18, hosting Clarion. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
